hi guys, i used to run an old van LDV convoy 2.5d on mainly veg oil did some serious miles as it was used for courier work but running & starting was exactly the same as ordinary diesel apart from the smell of a barbeque each time i pulled up at the lights ! ..im thinking of trying this in my T2 as im knocking up 800 mile month , ive read some use 50/50 mix without any problems sounds good but would the fuel pump take the strain

800 a month :lol luxury :lol I run mine hard on bio and have no issues over the last couple of years :D

i have a zexel fuel pump i think its the copy of the bosch, running neat rapeseed seperate tank ,once the temp is about 60 degrees with a heat exchanger, no problems but must remember to switch back to diesel a few miles before stopping.

Go for it

Run mine 50/50 Runs a dream Even on m,o,t, time The emissons were just great Very very low :thumbs

i was thinking of using the 50/50 mix from april to about sept warmest weather then back to diesel throughout the winter . with the veg oil been slightly thicker than diesel just wondered how the pump might cope but with a 50/50 mix maybe its not so bad

50/50 mix shouldnt be a problem, you only need a heat exchanger if running it neat, i think that some people run veg 80/20 diesel in the summer, but i am sure someone will be along soon to correct me, if i remeber right the zexel and the bosch fuel pumps are ok with veg/bio, but the other make ....? doesnt seem to like it.i run with rapeseed or ktc soya mine dosent seem to like sunflour,

would suggest to find out what pump you have berfore tyring,

If you google it there are some really indepth websites on this with advice on pros and cons of oils, which pumps suffer and even more, verging on geeky:augie

at the end of the day you have absolutely no idea what rubber/neoprene/etc seals you have in your pump, and neither will the manufacturer, some say Bosch pumps are OK others dont, why? because Bosch used different seals, some OK some not, at the end of the day you takes your chance, Rick

I started using veg oil a couple of weeks ago, first tank was about 70:30 diesel to oil and the second is 50:50. I'm doing this as I commute around 325 miles per week - so far I've used 50 litres of veg oil and I've saved £22.50 vs diesel.

No problems so far for me, just that interesting smell. I will be changing the fuel filter next weekend (must order one...) and the engine oil is about due too - been around 6000 miles since it last changed IIRC.
I'm using the KTC oil from costco which is around £18.95 for 20 litres - 95p per litre.
If you're unsure you could probably just wang 5 or 10 litres of oil in around half a tank and if it runs funny, top it up with diesel to dilute it down.

ktc 20l in makro is £18.75 so works about 93.75per litre:D

Just got 60l of KTC from Morrisons for 90p/l . Used 9l in my truck already mixed with about £12 of diesel with no problems So, still got a load left, and will be doing at least 1000 miles this week, so it's back to my Peugeot Partner for fuel economy. I'm very wary about using Veg oil in the Peugeot. Anyone had any experience ? It's got a 2003 2 litre Hdi engine

no:eek: common rail do not like any type of oil as the pump can not take the strain of the oil and it will go bang:eek: but in the old 1.9 xud engine as long as it had a bosch pump then fine

Interesting point on Hdi engines, so a no no for our picasso then with the 1.6 Hdi 110hp engine then. It does over 50 mpg anyway, even at the legal speed limit + 10% :thumb2

I think a lot of diesel contains up to 5% bio anyway....:nenau

bio is diff to svo:thumb2

Putting SVO, WVO or BIO in a HDI engine is a BIG no no. It will also kill the pump in any common rail pump too i.e. CDI TDCI TDDCI etc.

Generally, almost all modern diesels made after 2000 ish will not have much longevity if run on alternative oils, and many older models will suffer too.

One exception is VAG cars made up to 2003 as they run Bosh fuel pumps.

Do some research on the internet before saving a few £ on fuel, Fuel pumps are expensive to replace.

bio if made right can be used but it has to be made right:thumbs i had 2003 307 hdi ran on 100% bio from a trusted source for over 1year no problems:thumb2

Yeah just been having a look and the genral concencus seems to be a big no. Although it's not perfect it does great MPG and its comfortable for long journeys. Guess Ill be sticking to proper fuel for now......

Absolutely not in a HDI engine, standard diesel injects at around 2000 psi and is all mechanical, TDI runs at a constant 20 to 25,000 psi and the injectors are electrically controlled and very expensive, you only want clean diesel in these, Rick

I have been using cooking oil/ derv mix for quite some time with a zexel pump and did a test during last winters very low temperatures. Sunflower oil did not like the cold weather so I stopped using it. Rape seed oil was good and did not wax even at well below freezing and my car has been running very well on it. Asda put the price up of the rapeseed oil so it wasent worth using. Morrisons have been selling Ktc oil for £1 litre so I bought some, this is Soya oil
and have found that it waxes at freezing point so I will not be using it until the weather is warmer. regards bri

Over in france and germany they use 30% properly made bio diesel mixed in to pump diesel here its got to be min 5% bio in pump diesel accoding to the eu dont get mixed up with svo and good clean bio .
