2.4 petrol terrano 2 rough tick over.asked on the site were maf air sensor is,i think its on the left side its a black plastic rectangular part on throttle body, some on hear say that what it is other say it don't have one
also is the idle speed controller on the right side off manifold and can I take off to clean and is it bolted on
also I noticed dizzy cap am I right thinking these are mechanical like say the old ford cortinas, but I think there electronic ie not like point on the old car, please help its not my car im trying to help some one on a tight budget thanks

Maf is on the throttle body your most likely problem is the adjusters on the throttle spindle or the throttle position sensor at the other end of the spindle, does it only do I cold or hot as well, Rick

No no points, there are two types. One with external coil other all in the dizzy, Rick

well at the moment why weathers dry it tick over ok but bit lumpy sounds to me like it warms a little then you can hear chokes on it the revs pick up and then drop back off.but she said on colder damper days it stalls and cut out while driving till it warms up.part of prob could be middle box is blowing at weld 4mm hole and also slight blow at rear flange/gasket.do you think dizzy cap needs changing/rotor arm.r the idle speed conrollers easy to take apart r they screwed on thanks again will be fitting new centre box soon

If it only does it till it warms up then there is an adjustment on the cold throttle advance that is either out or the wax pellet device has failed, you can see it after removing the air box there are two screws on the cable carrier one is the hot/normal running screw and rests on solid Ali the other is the cols idle and rests on a domed pip which protrudes when cold and retracts as it warms up, Rick

thanks mate

I had the same problems as you describe on my old petrol 2.4.
turned out to be the egr valve.
trying to rack my brains now as it was a while ago when owned a petrol model.

yes forgot, the first thing I disable is the egr it has to be blanked with a plate as they pass air even when closed, Rick

A new dizzy cap & rotor arm wouldn't hurt anyway as they are a service part

Pics as promised, this is where the maf goes

and this one does the idle when hot, you need to remove the air box to get at both of these adjusters

this is where you put the blanking plate, on the left side of the 2 bolt holes between the the egr valve, not shown

and finally this is the egr valve as a temporary measure you can drill the top with a 4 mm drill just this side of the raised bit and then use a 4 mm punch and push or knock it down, all the petrols I have had this went down a couple of mm indicating it was stuck open, and on a couple of others even when down I could blow through the valve indicating the seat was not sealing, Rick

yes beer can in there stops it all and no does not effect emissions at all, but I would be checking the cold fast idle adjustment first, Rick

Rick is the man for petrol 100%.! :bow

EGR is the 1st thing to remove & blank off on both petrol & diesel SQUARE head lamped models :sly :naughty :D problems or not :thumbs

sorry to be pain but how do I check fast idle, would I just back the nut off and give half turn clock wise and see if it runs better and would you run it with filter off to test or reffit:nenau tthanks again
