Hi, hope everybody had a great Christmas?

Before I rip in to this can I just get my thoughts confirmed?

I drove the Mav today (SWB 1997 2.4) and after around 500m noticed a noise sounded like excessive road noise from the back, like I left the door open. Drove for about 2k and picked up a gas bottle and noticed a burning smell, rubber burning or oil burning. Also noise got worse the longer I drove and louder the faster I went. I Started suspecting wheel bearing or diff or stuck brakes at this stage, let it roll down a slight incline and rolled freely so when I got home I felt the hubs, O/s was cool but the near side rear was smokin hot so I reckon wheel bearing.

Is it just a standard assembley, does it need a press. Makes a difference if I do it at home or at work.

Thanks

Geoff

First task, I would jack it up, both rear wheels off the ground, and check if the brakes are binding.
Due to th LSD both wheels will turn together.

Check the play in the wheel bearing.

Usually a faulty wheel bearing starts as an oil leak from the rear hub, as the seal in mine went before the bearing.

Remove the hub and check for fluid leaks. See info on adjusting the handbrake.

Hope this helps.

There is a download on changing a rear wheel bearing.
If you do, replace the seal too.

Just confirm that it was the rear hub that was hot!!!

This has happened to both my front and rear hub's.

Front hub was the auto locker jammed on!

The rear was the rear brake cable seized.

im going with the brake seized on :thumbs

I was tempted that way myself as it was not a gradual development, I would normally expect a bearing to be a gradual problem getting worse, also the car had been stood for a week, what goes against it is that it will easily role without any resistance.

what goes for it is that the amount of heat generated would indicate a lot of friction

I get it jacked up in the morning and pull the drum off and see what I can find

Thanks

There are cases where the friction material breaks away from the shoe, and jams the rear drum.

Nuts size

Hi all looks like its the handbrake binding but need to take a wheel off - cant get my impact sockets in the alloy wheel can anybody tell me what size the wheel bolt is? I need to buy a narrow socket or what do you use - my 4 way wrench wont fit in either.

Thanks

Geoff
