Collecting my new Terrano tomorrrow

Hello All,
Off to collect my newly aquired Terrano tomorrow. Won the Ebay auction for it last week (been in Germany so couldn't collect straight away). Year 2002,2.7TDI, 79000 miles, got it for £1,800. Looks great on the photos and the guy selling is very nice and seems genuine (hope thats not going to be famous last words!!). Hope it is as good as it looks when I get there. What are the things I should check over when I get it back home.

They have a few random problems, which you can't really check for, but may surface one day. Starter motor, fuel issues, clutch pedal/pipes, brakes stuck/need adjusting, thermostat not working, electric windows/roof motors needing a bit of tlc, Intercooler not fitted properly! Locking hubs not working.

If you get a nasty grunching noise when on full lock, don't worry, that is just the steering lock limiters needing a coat of copper slip. Sounds like the end of the world the first time you hear it though.

The main issue is Rust...

Front of rear wheel arches by chassis,
Front floor pans,
Boot, just inside door,
Pipes (Fuel, brake and clutch) that travel the length of the vehicle underneath
Around the seatbelt mounts.

The Terrano is now home and Iam pleased with it so far. Drive home was 190 miles and it drove very smooth. Bad bits, AC not good so hoping it just needs gas, paint work on roof at rear is scratched quiet bad, it looks like someone in the past has carried things on the roof between the rails, but not visable most of the time. Thanks for the tip re 'grunching' sound on full lock Lazy-ferret, it does this and I would have been very worried if you had not pointed it out. advice on where to lube it would be appreciated. Tick over at approx 750rpm seems a bit rough, is this normal? and when the ignition is turned off engine ' wobbles a bit' is this normal or might the engine mounts need changing.

AC can be a few things,

First job is change the pollen filter in the cab, as it stops enough air getting through for the AC to cool properly when it is blocked, and it blocks quicker than most people change it.

Other job is that AC's need re-gassing every couple of years or so, so for if the above makes no difference, get it done, and see how it goes.

My AC was non-existent when I picked it up, and just changing the pollen filter and the re-gas made a huge difference.

Granching sound, there are two metal lugs that stick up on each of the front bottom wish bones, one on the front of it, and one on the rear. Just rub some grease up each of these, and repeat from time to time. There is a bolt on the back of the wheel that rubs up and down them, which should have a nylon cover. these wear out, and can be replaced, but regular greasing seems to work just as well.

Tick over, could be a number of things, prob best to do a search on here, as it could be anything from dirty fuel or air filter, to numerous other little things, which you need to tick off one at a time.

They do tend to give a good little shudder when you turn them off.

Shame about the roof, some people just do not seem to care about their cars paint work, the good thing is, you can hardly see the roof most of the time, and if you put a body lift on, stand no chance..:lol Have fun.

id say the engine "wobbling" a bit is normal, but ive only ever owned old used 4x4s!! well worth inspecting the engine mounts though and if easy enough, replace them - should make things much smoother.

tickover is about right, is should be 750 +-50, but again things may smooth out with new engine mounts.

Mine wobbles and has a slight run on.
On your pic in the first post the front end is a bit saggy/low compared to the rear. Only 10-15mins job to do. Put you head under the middle of the car and look forwards. you will see 2 threaded bars sticking up from a beam. They will have 2 Nuts at the bottom, one is a lock nut, crack that off and tighten the lower one. Do both sides and use a tape measure from wheel arch/wing so it's same both sides. Should be slightly lower at the front than the back.

Thanks for the info chaps.
I have removed the pollen filter and it looks like its been in their for a long time, have new one on order.
Have greased the lugs on the wishbone and sorted that problem out, thanks.
The tick over is not really rough but there is a fair bit of vibration through the body and steering wheel. Have followed a few threads on here on this subject but they don't come to any conclusion. Guess its something to live with??

i think they left the factory with the front end lower just so we had something to do on them from the very beginning lol

See my Need Welding post for example of the Terrotto floor. Fold back seats up and lift carpet at rear passenger doors. Nissan must have had a deal with Kit Kat to use their spare tin foil wrappers for the floor :doh
