Now then guys.

My 2000 SWB terrano has a very "stiff" gear box when the engine is cold. I can get it into gear with a pull but when i put it in reverse and then start the engine the vehicle creeps backwards even with the clutch fully depressed. Once the engine is warm the gear changes are fine and getting into first or reverse is not a problem at all.

Presume my clutch is on its way out but can anyone esle shed any light on the problem.

Thanks,

Matt

hmm...ok.

handbrake on, 3rd gear, drop clutch, see what happens. Shoudl stall almost immediately. If it keeps running, clutch.

when I tested mine, I used 4th and fifth gear to test, dont do it too many times though. mine was certainly on its way out, but i never had creeping in reverse....

it almost sounds like you need a gear oil change though, and some molyslip...

Sounds like clutch pressure plate is on its way out as its not clearing or could be master or slave cylinder not pushing clutch far enough to disengage. i had one with your symptoms it was broken finger in pressure plate.

Change the oil but dont use molyslip.i changed oil on mine and added molyslip couldnt select any gears without a struggle.drained re filled and fine.something to do with synchro.you can also get some pedal adjustment to master cylinder.

oh shit yes sorry, molyslip for the diff!!!!

pedal adjustment to the master cylinder 1st, drop the clutch pedal and turn the adjuster a few turns at a time and retry.

rick n swifty fitted a new clutch for me last year i did the master n slave and i noticed the biting point was almost on the floor a few turns of the adjuster sorted it.

I think that it is the oil, mine has always like that for the first 1/2 mile when starting from cold' always ok for the rest of the day. regard bri

remember use GL4 oil in your gearbox NEVER use GL5 or you wll have gear box problems.

Try bleeding the clutch first before changing the oil etc.

It sounds like the clutch is is not disconnecting the drive from the engine when depressed as the vehicle creeps with the clutch depressed. This could be due to a number of factors:
1) Check there is enough fluid in the clutch master cylinder.
2) See if there is any lost motion in the clutch pedel, check the nylon bush that drives the clutch master cylinder has not warn. it might only be a mm but it matters.
2) Check under the vehicle with the engine NOT running that there are no bulges in the flexible pipes by getting somone to press the pedal while you look and feel the flex pipe.
3) Check there are no leaks in the clutch system all the way back to the clutch damper at the rear of the vehicle.
