Hi folks - I am not sure if the clutch is going?, would appreciate advice!

In the morning, almost impossible to get into reverse. Forward gears difficult as well!
When running as nornal in 4th/5th, accelerator seems to have a mind of its own! Running high/low and I am hardly touching accelerator pedal. It sounds as if I am revving up all the while!

When out of gear, engine ticks over as normal.

Also, last few days since this started, orange 'check' engine warning light continiously illuminated.

Cheers, Paul

Yep sounds like your clutch is on the way out mate, I would get it sorted asap as if it burns out totally your going to be stuck, Trip to the garage for you me thinks.

your EML is worrying as I wouldn't normally associate that with clutch failure? look up how to get fault codes and tell us what you find.

and be certain that the throttle thing isn't a faulty sensor. if its revving under load thats an indication of clutch slip, but not if its doing it on the flat...

try dipping the clutch in top gear while keeping your foot on the loud pedal - if it struggles to catch up when you let the clutch up again thats a sign of failure...

Cheers for info, have booked it in later this week to be checked over. Will thread the outcome!

Over the last 9 years I've had two clutches go on mine and they don't really show any signs other than one day they just go bang!!!!!

you could try putting hand brake on and try pulling away, just to see if the clutch is slipping, might even save you a diagnostic charge, :thumb2:augie

Standard clutch test, hand brake on hard select 5th gear floor the throttle, drop clutch, and I mean drop not release, it should stall the engine straight away if it slows the engine to the point of labouring it is on the way out but with care could last some time, if engine continues to run at fairly high revs the clutch is shot, do not repeat this test until the clutch has cooled, Rick

so,handbrake on clutch down, fith gear, full revs, clutch up (liek a racing start?) and it should stall (because the handbrakes on) instantly ish?

im gonna try that too..

To finish off this thread, it was the 'clutch' that had gone. Replaced and all well again (at a price!)
Many thanks to everyone for their comments and advice.

If anyone requires any replacement alloys & tyres, please see an ad placed in classifieds earlier today.

Just after I have paid my garage bill of £350............

It has started all over again! Engine warning light intermittent, but worst, cannot get it into gear first thing in the morning!!! Reverse or any forward!!!
But after running the engine for nearly ten minutes each time, I can, with a lot of effort, just get it into the gear. Once I am up and running, no problems at all with the new clutch!
It has obviously got to go back in to the garage, but would appreciate any pointers in the meantime!!

Regards - Paul

Sounds like the garage has cocked something up putting it back together. Sent you a PM about your wheels btw.

If the MIL is on then some sensor fault. Clutch is not coded as far as I know. Get the code read for more help:thumbs

No there are no sensors on the clutch, did you do the stall test on the clutch before it went to the garage, and now when you say it will not go into gear, the froward gears are syncro, but reverse is not so when you try to put it into reverse what happens? Rick

Cannot get it forward or reverse until 5 - 10mts elapsed with the engine running in neutral. Only then, with gentle pushing/pulling will it go in either. After a few hundred yards, clutch works fine!!! Clutch was definitley goosed by the way (garage owned by brother-in-law, so reliable at least!)

What you are describing is not a clutch problem if you try and put it in reverse without putting your foot on the pedal it should grind the gears if it does not do that then you have a box problem, sorry mate, but there may be hope yet, just had a word with Swifty, and his reaction was oil, if it is only when cold have you got the correct oil, Rick

or even enough oil ?

I put molyslip in mine to quieten it and it improved the gear change, a lot slicker.

The gear shift rubber hasn't fallen apart has it? Look below the gear lever gaiter, there is another gaiter that perishes, and if the clutch was replaced then this would have been disturbed.
Cheapest fix if it is.:nenau
