Hi guys,new problem,
my 2.7 tdi lwb 1998 has developed of pedal problem.

The clutch is not slipping, but the pedal is on the floor, and very hard to get into gear, the clutch was replaced about two years ago,so it cant be the plate/or cover, just wondered if the slave cylinder could be on its way out??

Where is the slave cylinder positioned?,could it just want bleeding??
Has any one else had a similar problem??
the truck drives ok,and is ok first thing in the morning, only just goes into gear, but its not dragging when i pull up with the pedal full depressed.
any help gratefully recived,andy.:bow

Do a search on here for clutch problems, there are a whole host of things...

The Slave is almost directly under the master, but on the side of the gear box, and you have to be under the truck to see it.

There is a flexible rubber pipe, which seems to perish, so that the fluid can get between the inner and outer layers, resulting in a bubble forming and loosing hydraulic pressure to the clutch. The problem is, this only shows if you either have someone else operate the peddle while you are under it, or in my case the pipe finally splits, but even then, finding where the fluid was leaking from was not obvious.

I replaced both the cylinder and pipe, but I think I could have got away with just the pipe, had I realised.

While you are doing this, you might want to also blank off the connection to the extra "Damping" pipe that runs to the rear of the car, as this is a royal pain in the ..... and seems to be the route cause of most of the clutch problems on the T2.

Many thanks, ive not seen any leaks on her,so was begining to wonder what the hek was going on,whats the idea behind the damping pipe?? will it affect it in any way?
If not,can it live without it?
Many thanks for your help,andy.

aye bin the bloody damping pipe it causes nowt but problems :lol that is most likely the cause of your problem anyway

I am trying to disconnect mine, just not got round to it. I am going to order one of these from Ebay as it looks the easiest way to do it, since I can't find anything in my boxes of bits that will fit the hole.

Several members on here have removed the pipe, and the reports are great. One guy used a ball bearing to block it, I can't find one the right size.. another guy got his local motor factor to make up a crimped off end. Someone also says one of the flexible brake pipes fit instead of the specific clutch pipe with the special block with the hole for the damper, but I was not sure which pipe he meant.

mine is doing this, but i have no idea if the clutch has ever been done, going to order clutch kit & fork 2moro, i've already removed the dampner pipe & replaced master, slave and flexi plus i'm not losing fluid. :doh i will let you know how i get on but prob be the weekend before i get to it.

tip: take it out of gear whilst moving, rev to just over 2000rpm and hold clutch gently in position of the gear you would like as speed & rev drops it should just slid in, doesn't work for 1st or reverse tho thats a turn engine off then engage gear & start up in gear shot. been driving mine for a week like this :augie

Can anyone tell us the size of bolt we need to blank of the damping pipe?

I have a small leak coming off the flexi hose, next to the slave cylinder on the bell housing. It only leaks when someone presses the clutch.
I carry a bottle of clutch fluid with me now - I'll get round to getting the flexi fixed at some point...

The blanking bolt I ordered did not work. It kept leaking despite several attempts to sort it out. It was getting late, and I was getting desperate, basically trying anything that had a thread on it, to try and find something that fitted.

I discovered that my Air Compressor fittings fitted. I used a Brass one, and braised a brass bolt into the hole, making a blanking bolt. I fitted it with a bit of Silicon tape, and it has been in there ever since.

The fitting was 1/4 BSP, and you can get blanking plugs on Fleabay.

Just as a note, clutch/brake fluid eats paint, so you will want to get it done sooner rather than later, as these things rust easy enough with good paint, without giving them an excuse.

I didn't, I tookn off the junction box, cleaned it so no flammable liquid was present & stuck a blob of weld in the hole. :thumb2

on my old terrano I took off the fitting, took out the old pipe and put a taper head screw with a rubber o ring to blank it off.tightened it all up,bled it up and never looked back.
don't have that problem now as I run an auto.

That is what we ended up doing, :thumbs now found it as a broken pedal spring.. :doh and to top it off it's now raining.. :surrender
