To update this thread I finally got 'round to replacing the master cylinder tonight.
Very easy job.
12mm deep socket for the 2 nuts holding the master to the bulkhead, 10mm spanner to remove the pipe from the end of the cylinder and 8mm spanner to bleed the master and slave.
As suspected in the post above, I now have a slick shifting 'box with a master cylinder back at the very start of it's adjustment :thumb2
