Just wondering how do you get the gear box out with the crossmember in place that holds the torsion bars not had a proper look yet under it

box out is a barstuard of a job, I am told you can just get at the clutch by sliding the box back on the torsion bars, but never tried it, and to get the box out completely the member has to be removed as do the torsion bars, I favour engine out, can do in a day no prob, worst part is you have to drop the front diff, Rick

I thought it looked a bugger so say to move box back would be diffs dropped gear lever of unbolt box mounts and move back in theory

no if you are going to try and move the box back, just remove the prop shaft's no need to touch the diffs, but I really do not know if you can get it back far enough, do not forget if you can just squeez the clutch out you must have enough space to insert an alignment tool to centre the plate, Rick

Sorry ment props not diffs lol it maybe better to pull engine out but my only snag is this one has aircon what would it take to remove the torsion bars if I mark them up

Hi mate, I did mine not that long ago. Removing torsion bars and cross member was easy enough just heavy work as I was on my back! (no ramp) Plenty of posts on removing torsion bars on here. One bolt on the gearbox is opposite to the others so watch out for that. You will need a few of you to lift it back on!! Took three of us. I'm no expert but managed ok. Not sure you would be able to slide it back and get in ok. Thanks Craig

the garage did mine and they said they didn't remove the torsion bars just dropped the cross member with them on down and blocked it and removed the others and then moved the gearbox back

Have you any pix of this procedure...

I would say with the cross member hanging lower it would give the room to move the box back I was quoted £150 to have a new clutch that was me supplying the parts and them fitting but I thought I might as well do it myself now the weather is improving

No sorry mate, but if you need help you can PM me and ill give you a good guide as you do it. It is straight forward enough just heavy work!! There is two bolts holding the gearbox on at the top which are a little hard to get to! I'm in west Yorkshire if your local ill help out :thumbs

Let's hope it won't be too bad my clutch is still gripping out pedal is sticking at times but if you rest your foot on the pedal it slips and also don't have to push pedal far to disingage

Ive done plenty on my own on my back just take weight with trolley jack is well ballanced on the gearbox crossmember

Ah so box not of balance I did a grand vitara and the transfer box was to one side and made it a sod to go back on on

Aircon is not a problem just remove the compressor and tie it up out of the way, but if a garage offered to do it for £150, I would jump at it, cos which ever way you choose to do it, once done you will be knackered, Rick

I just don't want them to bodge it they don't look the most trustworthy place to have it done if I do it myself I kno if it goes tits up it's down to me I have changed quite a few clutches in quite a few types of cars and 4x4
