Hi Guys.

I have a clunking underneath whenever I take up drive, either foot on and off the throttle or when changing gear. :( :(

I can imagine its a mounting, but can someone tell me how to check for it on my own!!!! (Sad I know!!)

Is it just a case of getting a prybar and see what moves?? Is there a common mounting problem i.e. gearbox rear etc.

Thanks

Does it just happen when you go over bumps???
If it is,it will probably be something to do with the suspension,or a bush!

I would pop underneath with a prybar as you said & see if you can move the G/box about whilest looking at the mounting to see if the have gone  I would check to see if the exhaust is catching anywhere which mine was as the rear part of the centre section seemed to have an extra mounting on it which was hitting the n/s/r floor so I took a hacksaw to it & it's been bliss ever since :p I would also check the UJ on the rear prop for play

I shall get a bar and have a play about. Also will check the exhaust.

What am I looking for on the prop forward and back play or rotary play??

:? :?

I would check both directions on the prop & lissen for any sort of clunking  But i'm sure someone will be along soon to give you a better answer than me

If you have a problem with your prop it will be with the universal joints at each end, there shouldn’t be any play in them at all and if one has gone and the rollers have dropped out it should be evident by rocking the prop (rotary) and looking for play at the cross pieces.

Not really heard of anyone having problems with them but check the diff too, the pinion bearings might be worn, just get hold of the prop shaft at the back end and see if you can see any movement in the flange on the diff. Think gearbox cross member mount is favourite though.

Only just read this posting, and all the follow-ups I would be looking along the line that toolbox suggests as I have had this happen many years ago to two cars one a mk 3 cortins and the more recently a vuaxhaal carlton est both gave simalar sound as to the one you are discribing.

Ok Ive just braved the cold........Its the rear propshaft UJ.

There is about a 1-2 mm play moving it from side to side.

Opinions on how long this will last??????

Im going out for a test run off roading sunday, should I swap the prop from my other one or will it hold??????

Is it just the 4 bolts and pull

Ok, Ive just changed the props..........well put the original back on!!

They are different!! 8O 8O

The overall length is about an inch different, but the flange (cup) which sits inside the gearbox is about 2 inches further back, so when fitting the cup sits outside the gearbox housing.

Do they have to change everything?

How much is it to replace the UJ part??

I'll not say what your expecting

Try a propshaft specialist, the one near me fixes and balances them while you wait and is not overly expensive.

Ok propshaft sorted. With help from Thor with his contacts list ( Thanks matey)

Got the part I required from Congleton Propshafts. Very good service and only £30, although they did say they would fit it for me, I turned up and they were surprised to see it still attached to the car (well derrrrr!!) as they dont remove shafts I had to do it. :| :|

All repaired now

Hey that's good value.
Love to have seen their faces when they asked for the propshaft. 8O

Daft really "where is the prop mate" "under the car coming out of the gearbox" "Oh we dont do that" "What! give me some spanners Ill take it off" " sorry we are not insured for that"

Nanny state
