ok, got it. SOOOO...with that in mind, and my clicking when turning in 4wd ONLY, what should I check (assuming there is NO servicing of the hubs/)

I figure: CV joints, driveshafts and prop? heat shields? Should I be thinking about the transfer box itself? anyway of testing if the transfer box is making the noise? Front diff, anything to check there?

I would guess cv joints the only way to tell is listen. You could always fit auto hubs or disable the 4x4 altogether depends wether you will ever use it.Ive never used 4x4 on the road in 7 years of driving a 4x4

ok ill do some investigation this weekend. I do use 4x4, but not often. to be honest, I rely on it to be there when I need it, especially for the snow when it comes as its all hilly where I live.

but everything is spinning even in 2wd from the wheels upto the transfer box,
so cv's etc are in constant use, the front diff is in constant use.

its almost like full time four wheel drive, but the free action is at front of transfer
box, the dog clutch only, not down at hubs as in manual or auto hubs..

so if clicking in 4wd then perhaps in t-box?

if testing 4wd then do need to be in a straight line, or on a loose surface if
steering.

I was thinking that in 4wd there is more stress and tension in the front drive shafts which could cause the clicking if the CV joints are worn.

Just to help clear things up a bit auto hubs were fitted until late 1999 in 2000 the auto hubs were replaced with fixed hubs hope this helps some

If the the t-box, would it just click? Should I change the oil and if so, what type? Just to me if its the t-box, it would make noise even in a straight line?

is front end engaging, could jack up rear off ground, then carefully 4hi or lo

see if front end wants to move truck, just feel it attempt....

yup, pretty sure it engages - tried it the other night on some gravel/mid and can see/feel the front spinning etc and in 4L obviously everything much more solid and slow

ok guys, could do with some more pointers!!

just been out in the wind and rain to try and diagnose my "clicking" sound when I engage 4wd and make a tight turn.
Experimented a bit, mine is fixed hubs, so no reversing to disengage 4wd. If I make a full lock turn in 2wd, all good. If I then engage 4wd (with wheels on full lock) I get immediate clicking or crunching (front wheels still seem to slip), again take it out of 4H and it stops. Does exactly the same in 4L but I didn't mess too much with that gear. The noise occurs forwards or reverse when wheels are turned tight ONLY. No noise in a straight line, and no noise gentle turns. It only occurs when I turn the steering wheel at least one turn....

I drove home, then had a look underneath - cant see anything in the way of the driveshafts etc, CV boots look fine, and the driveshaft boot also looks fine. no leaks where the driveshafts enter the transmission, and all that area looks ok. Cant see any oil leaks either.
anyone any clues? do I need to jack the car up, remove the front wheels and check anything, or could the issue be further in towards the transmission?

. If I make a full lock turn in 2wd, all good. If I then engage 4wd (with wheels on full lock) I get immediateclicking or crunching (frontwheelsstillseem to slip), again takeitout of 4Hand it stops.

This sounds like wind up to me,

frontwheelsstillseem to slip

yeah, I am leaning towards this. question is, how do I fix it??

Dont use 4wd on the road

Only soft stuff

Grass mud snow gravel

NOT on roads

yeah I understand that...I don't!!! I never have, this clicking was here when I bought it. As said, only happens on full lock. What I need to know is, is there possibly any serious damage (despite 4wd actually working) and if it is a bad case of windup, how do I fix it. Drive on something very slippy? if so, for how long?

Dont have it in 4wd,

If you hear it, then you dont need to be in 4wd.

As will slip and youll not hear it on soft surfaces

ah ok, fair point actually....good point in fact.....very good point, maybe ive been a bit silly......what you just said seemed to switch on a light bulb.

I have been testing it on rough broken surface behind the house-its like a rough track with plenty of loose stone and grit and crap. That said, perhaps there simply isn't enough slippage, and its just winding up (or is still wound up and cant unwind?):bow

do it again round back of house till u hear the noise then stop mark the tyre with chalk jack up 1 front wheel if there is windup the chalk mark will move as the front has open diff just like if that wheel was on ice and rest was on hard ground :thumbs

Hi,

Yesterday our T2 started a clicking sound from the right front, like the kind of noise you get from a spinning ratchet, the faster you go the louder it us, slower you go the less noise it makes.

Last night I put in 4x4 then took it out again via rolling back etc & the noise was gone. Until today when it has returned.

Our T2 has auto hubs, I thought it may be these, what are your thoughts ? Also finding a new set seems tough, any idea where I may get some other than eBay?

I was told recently to think about manual hubs, some AVM ones, is this worth doing over autos? I assume it's ok to swap from autos to manuals too, it won't upset anything else on the motor?

Thank you in advance for any help/advice!
