hi chaps,

had a read around the forum, but wanted some tailored advice! Just been out for the second drive in the Terrano to look for faults. When in 4wd, and turning, I get a clicking sound - doesn't do it in 2wd, and neither does it do it in 2wd full lock. Driving forward and 4wd and gentle turning is more or less ok.

Is this the brake rings etc? If I service the hubs, what do I need to buy?

I haven't tried engage/disengage several times yet - which is a bit of advice I have read, but if I need to order a service kit I need to do it asap so I have it for the weekend!:thumbs

Hasnt it got fixed hubs?

not a clue - auto hubs is all I can tell you...

take your hubs off and have a look, take a pic or 2 and post on here, I did a full strip and rebuild of auto hubs but do not ask me to find it! Rick

mine is an my 02 52 plate with fixed hubs, ist yours on 03/03 so unless been
rero'd to autos it s fixed so all of front drive train is turning all time moving
as far as dog clutch in transfer box, akin to an early landy....

So can't they be stripped and serviced as per the downloads?

Sounds like driveshafts as doesnt do it when straight. Also best check front prop while youre there as prone to failure due to no grease nipples.

In what way driveshafts, what should I be looking for? Are we saying the auto locking hubs aren't the issue?

You dont have auto locking hubs as said above u have fixed hubs the drive shafts will be more looking at the cv joints

gotcha, sorry im just learning about the hubs!!

so, the front CV joints - they will only click if the 4wd is engaged - because the driveshafts start working, is that correct? I have to admit, it did sound like CV joint clicking - no vibration or anything so I discounted driveshafts.

I did have a quick look at the CVs and couldn't see any splits/leaks - MOT was about a month ago and no advisories or failures on those.

Is it best to inspect the driveshafts and CV joints, and what should I look for on the driveshafts, lateral play?

I know mine done that in 4wd & I serviced my auto hubs & had a cv to change, but it hasn't been in 4wd since so unsure if if fixed the noise or not but my drive shafts looked good when they were removed.

ok, ill service the auto hubs then, with luck thatll fix it. where can I get the rings from?

You don't have auto hubs:doh

:doh oh for gods sake...ok so...I have fixed hubs. I am learning, I don't know what that means. See, when I tried the 4wd yesterday, and when test driving the car, to disengage the 4wd I had to drive backwards. I will double check the sun visor instructions and the manual.

I am still confused as to what I need to check. If the hubs are fixed - what does that mean? when I disengage the 4wd, what gets disengaged and is it that what needs checking, or should I be looking at CV joints (or would those still click without 4wd engaged)

I really appreciate everyones help and patience...just trying to understand what I have!!?!

don't know if your's is auto's or not but think its the main stealers u'll get rings from & u'll need cooper grease too, no too thick mind :thumb2

Fixed hubs is where the driveshaft is locked to hub all the time ie the driveshafts and the front prop are always spinning when driving. When you put it in 4x4 then the front prop is being driven by the engine shouldnt need to reverse to go back to 2wd

ok, got it. SOOOO...with that in mind, and my clicking when turning in 4wd ONLY, what should I check (assuming there is NO servicing of the hubs/)

I figure: CV joints, driveshafts and prop? heat shields? Should I be thinking about the transfer box itself? anyway of testing if the transfer box is making the noise? Front diff, anything to check there?
