hey guys,

I may have asked this question ages ago when I first got the car but cant find the thread. Today I got chance to test my 4wd system again in the snow, and although everything is tickety boo, when I turn the steering wheel more than 1/4 of a turn I start getting a clickety sound - metallic, like a chain. Doesn't get worse the closer to full lock I get, and seems to be almost on and off. Does it more with a right turn but does do it on a left turn.

Any ideas what this could be? I have an 03 plate Terrano, and I believe they are FIXED hubs? Normal driving is perfect, the drop links etc are all good, the noise only occurs in 4wd, haven't tried in 4L yet...

:bow

Sounds like one or both CVJs are going bad, probably will not be noisy in 2 wd as no load on them, usually as a result of the boots failing and dirt/water gets in, Rick

Any clicking in 4 wheeldrive normally suggests auto hubs, but since yours are fixed, then..
It could be cv joints, or upper or lower ball joints.
Might even be front prop shaft UJs
When turning in 4 wheel drive, it causes wind up, that normally causes some wheel slip...
So there will be extra torsion on the front drive shafts, compared to two wheel drive, where the only torsion they are under, is the resistance of the front diff.

cheers Rick and Rustic, you have jogged my memory and I think that was the suggestion before.

I will look into getting the CVs done as part of the diagnostics though I haven't checked the Uj's yet, I think the CVs is the more likely culprit!

:thumbs:bow:clap

can anyone confirm - are the CV joints all the same for these cars?

I can see some that say 1992-02, and some that say 92-, some say 92-06...?!?!

I have fixed hubs, and no idea if that make any difference when it comes to fitting new CV joints...

as far as I am aware they are all the same, they all have two circlip grooves so they fit Auto hubs and Fixed, Rick

Cv noise for sure, I got that from the title :lol

Although I do also have a squeak now, as my hubs are not serviceable and cvs are new I think rick suggested front uj?

cheers Alex, makes sense to check them while i am at it then? unless i take to garage of course. Cant imagine that's a huge expense in itself (two front ujs?)

Clivvy, remember my issues from front end. That turned out to be front prop but seemed totally different to what you describe.

It's 8 bolts for the propshaft. Still got my old prop if you want to borrow it to see if your noises changes. The prop has one brandnew bearing fitted and I have a new unused bearing if needed.

In regards to cost I have no idea for the front UJs nor the time needed to access and replace them? :nenau

I've never had to touch a front prop but rear prop UJ's are easy enough, 8 bolts and pull it out.

Get an oversized socket that you can rest the UJ on and then a smaller one on top that you'll be hammering the hell out of with a lump hammer until it pushes through.

If you want a more refined approach then use the socket technique but in a strong vice, I used a Record No.3 when I did mine first time round, I did a write up on it, let me see if I can find the thread and I'll link you to it :)
