paul

Can of Carb cleaner is only a couple of quid - never tried nail polish remover....nor nail polish for that matter!:lol

its only acetone with colour ive used before no probs.

hi all, i agree with all comments above, but you could also try IPA "isopropanol" or if you have the solution to clean cd's that will do, i use a small artist paintbrush, and be very cearful not to break the wires,
good luck

I'd go for carb cleaner too....nail polish can have some additives which could leave a residue.

as a ex electronic engineer .... we used to use isopropanol quite regularly to clean cd lenses /video heads etc ... im sure acetone /surgical spirit etc leaves a residue

Nail polish remover is not alcohol based and will damage a lot of plastics so may damage the holder.

Meths is alcohol based though.

pure acetone doesn't but I wouldn't vouch for nail polish remover, which isn't always acetone based anyway.....some of it is designed for fake nails which acetone could dissolve.

I've been putting acetone in my diesel for years with no ill effects on the MAF

Isopropanol is the only thing I know that will get rid of permanent marker ink.
When I was in the electronics industry we used carbon tetrachloride, genclean, etc, they were banned as they were hazardous and also damaged the ozone layer, but were great degreasers.

we once tried trichoroethylene  .... but soon stopped that cos people where getting high and having lots of headaches

bluddie lethal stuff

Ah yes that was the deadly one, if someone smoked while using it, it was a killer if I recall ...:doh

Acetone does a good job too.:D

Isopropanol (aka Isopropyl alcohol, aka brake cleaner) is widely used as a cleaner/degreaser for all sorts of sensitive stuff - tape heads, camera lenses, camera sensors and so on. It doesn't leave a residue IF it is very high purity. You can buy it cheaply on Ebay.

I just fitted a new (s/h actually) MAF to my truck, was idling very low, very easy to stall and felt like whenever I took m. Foot off the throttle, that an exhaust brake was retarding it. Took the original MAF off, and it was full od hay/dust and such.

Put on the new one and it was an instant difference, now it seems to have reverted back to driving poor again.

I mentioned cleaning it to the garage man and he said not to as it's a heated element inside.

Whats the chances I've just been unlucky? Is there any way to diagnose a failure with a multimeter? Will disconnecting it totally make it any better? Any loom faults to check for? Am I ok to clean it with brake cleaner?

Cheers in advance!

well clearly it sorted the problem initially. and the garage guy was correct really; cleaning it isn't the best idea but is sometimes unavoidable.

Have you got a proper air filter on this thing and no air leaks into the inlet pipework because theres no way all that shite should have found its way in there?????

And as I have no idea what brake cleaning fluid is or what residues it leaves, use one of the things suggested above. Carb cleaner is probably best and easiest to obtain.

i could be wrong, but it sounds like the filter is missing out of the air flow housing...???
