Cleaning Engine Bay

Whats the best way to clean the engine and engine bay ? On older motors I used to use Gunk and then just hose it off with water. With the way electrics and electronics are now on motors ie ECU etc I suspect you have to be a bit more careful. My engine and bay is looking a bit grubby so want to give it a good clean.

It will be interesting to see what advice is offered here, as it is something that I have been tempted to do, but wary of for the very same concerns as you.

I once asked a professional mechanic, and he said don't if everything is working. Sage advice? Maybe...

well, I wouldnt jet wash it thats for sure!!

im also extremely wary of steam cleaning.

personally, I get engine degreaser, and spray it in and scrub away...

After offroadin I wash mine off when I remember with the pressure washer simples. Uncle Nissan did a grand job of waterproofing all the joints on the multiplugs etc :thumbs

Had 3 terrano's 1 mav Have washed all of them with a presure washer from time to time over the years First of all i covered the engine etc with T F R, left it 5 min's And then gave it a good blast They all came out like new After they had dryed i sprayed WD40 over all electrics etc Not only the terrano's i have wash many many cars etc over the years Never had a prob,As long as you dont be daft a start blasting the turbo pipes and main elec sockets you will be fine :clap

I'm with Dee and Makeitfit on this one.

This isn't some poncey soft-roader and the electrics etc.. are well protected, plus the ECU is indoors.

I get mine sluiced at the local bus depot with their steam cleaner where you just cross the geezers palm with a nice ironed £20, I think most of them do it.

Never ever ever had a problem of any sort.

Simple from a former valeter

Get any NON ACIDIC wheel wash / engine degreaser / neat screen wash & spray it / brush it on ENGINE OFF & COLD

Once sprayed / brushed on

Start your engine & then pressure wash off

IT WILL NOT DAMAGE THE 2.7TD / TDI ENGINE

can't see a problem doing it, Aslong as you don't start squirting water up the air intake.

Anyway mines got a snorkel.

I have used various engine cleaners, inc Gunk, but that stinks for a week after. I just read the instructions, warm engine, cold engine or what ever.
I wash off with a spray from the hosepipe and avoid the alternator.

The problem is if you have a tarmac drive, it will be damaged by the solvent.
Also the run off will contain oil, so you do need to see where it is all going.
I do mine at the bottom of the drive and the run off goes down the nearest drain 3 feet away. :wasntme

Do it every year and very little effort required.
Be aware it can also remove waxoyl....
