Today I thought I'd tackle the job of Claire's roof rack.
My brief was that it needs to sit behind the panoramic sunroof and for it not to cost much money! :lol
The rack itself came from ebay and was £149... All the other bits I had in the garage from various other vehicles and projects.
The 1st problem to tackle was the fact that car manufactures like to put roof racks in the middle of the roof, so buying off the shelf Nissan X-Trail crossbars was out of the question because the front crossbar would go right over the sunroof. :doh
My solution was this:
Using some 4mm plate, I extended the original mounting points in over and between them fitted some T-Track between them.
FYI - My original plan was to remove the factory roof rails altogether and replace them with this T-Track. However I would of had to remove headlining from the car to do that... Then I'd have to spend more money on two aluminum rails to act as cross bars, as the rack and mounts aren't that wide. (I do believe it would have looked better, and it would of made the whole thing lower and sleeker... Maybe an upgrade for another day?!) :nenau
To keep it looking as neat as possible, I decided to cut the plastic covers so they still fit over my extension brackets. (Something you can't do with factory fitter crossbars!) :thumbs
All said and done, I'm pretty pleased with the outcome.
Once the lockdown is over, I am going to change all the bolts... Especially the ones holding my mounting plates to the roof. (These were just bolts I had kicking around, I'd feel better if they were all uniform!) :lol
