Checking engine oil level

My patience is starting to run out with my '99 2.7 SE. I cannot get a good oil level on the dip stick. I have been patient with all its other problems, but this one is a pain. I can dip the oil 20 times. Hot, cold, standing 10 mins, standing 30mins. overnight whatever, and each time I get a different level. The stick will not come out clean, patches and streaks of oil the whole length, different levels on either side. You name it its got it. Even after oil and filter change and correct amount added it still will not give a true reading. Anyone have any suggestions to cool; my fevered brow? Deepee

I thought is was only me who had this problem on my 1995 2.7TD.

What I do now is remove the dipstick, wipe clean then don't insert it fully, leave approx 20mm sticking out, then remove the dipstick and add 20mm to the reading.
Works ok for me, I'm not sure what happens when you fully insert it, but the readings are different. Usually showing too much oil !
Try it and let me know.

french chalk!!

remove dipstick and clean, then rub french chalk on to it, insert, remove, read oil level,

I had this when I frist go the T2 but noticed the dipstick had been bent in a few places:dohI carefully straightened it out & it's been fine since:augie

This could be a sign that your engine is sludged up the jelly like sludge gets stuck up the dipstick tube. try an oil additive engine cleaner or a very long pipe cleaner
