I have a 98 Mav 2.7tdl. I get the check engine light coming on intermitently, brake and the light clears. Last couple of days it's come on on start up, won't clear and the engine has no powe, checked air filtet and going to replace with K&N. Any ideas?

First thing is to check the fault codes, there is a section in the downloads that tells you how to do this using a paper clip.:thumb2

check your MAF, if its hitachi carefully clean it with electrical contact cleaner, if its bosch replace it.

as said, definitely get those codes checked, there is a guide, its easy to do:thumbs

tried draining the water trap.

That's on the bottom of the fuel filter. undo the fitting a little, allow the liquid to go into a clear jar, then you can see if any water in there.:thumb2

Oh and welcome to the club, first post since joining in 2012.
I guess you know the site well.

Plenty of cheap fixes on this site, most are free, with a little time and effort, some, to fix problems you never knew you had lol ...
Have a look at the down loads section to look at most of the fixes.:thumb2:thumb2

MAF is always a good place to look at too.
The earlier Td's 94, 95, and some 96 didn't have an intercooler, so no mAF to go wrong.

Sounds to me like it might not be the engine light and might be the water in the fuel filter light if it goes out when braking

If it is the engine light, follow the process here to read the fault code and report back to us :)

If you are handy with technology, gte your laptop in the car and get yourself a Nissan Consult II cable and a piece of free software called ECUTalk which will read them all for you and clear them :thumb2

Instructions here;

If it does turn out to be the fuel filter drain light, underneath it there should be a tap with a pipe coming out the bottom and a wire which goes to the sensor which is what triggers your light on the dash, put something underneath, release the water and try again :thumb2

Can I get a +1 for that guys :naughty

Keep an eye on it, if replacing the filter has helped it was probs dodgy readings to your MAF :thumbs
