Changing the Stat....

Now this is going to sound like such a simple question but i'm going to ask it anyway...

I'm going to change the termostat on the T2 tomorrow, a simple job I have done on my old Mini's and fords many times, but before I totally knacker the car in doing so... believe me guys I can do it...

Will I need to drain the whole cooling system down to do this? or is it a simple case of und 3 bolts, remove stat and gasket and replace with new...??

God its been a while since I have had a car i can work on...

Hi Boggert

I suspect you'll need to drain the system at least to below the level of the 'stat or you'll have antifreeze all over the lump, which plays havoc with the paintwork and doesn't smell too good when heated up! I just changed the fluid in my rad and found that there is no drain tap like on old motors, you have to remove the bottom hose. Best done from below after you've removed the sump guard!

It has a section on the cooling system, how to remove/replace the 'stat and recommends that you drain the system completely.

You'll need adobe reader software (downloadable free) to open it.

Ain't it nice to have a motor that you can do some stuff on yourself?

I have recently changed my Thermostat........
Cold engine [obviously]
Loosen three bolts on housing......let coolant leak out, so that you can take off, no need to drain any more, clean everything, new thermostat, new gasket, replace. and top up with antifreeze mix.
wash away spilt coolant. make sure heater lever is over to hot....check level after running for a while.
Job done :smile:

Thanks all, thats very helpful, I've found the workshop manual Hummingbird has posted. I'll get some antifreeze as well just to top it up.

You are right it is nice to be able to tinker, just like the old days.

Did have to laugh, when I opened the bonnet it was filthy from my weekend out laning... :lol:

having changed the stat in 2 T2's i agree with thor if you have good anti freeze dont bother to drain, just wash off and check levels after.

You have seen from off road days that it will stand a bit of moisture round the engine block!

on the other hand! you coudl also use this as an opportunity to flush and renew coolant ready for the winter!

Yes all the help on here fantastic. when i took the photos for the workshop i remembered thinking ,hope this helps someone its a great idea , and i recon the membership is worth the £10 just for the downloads.

Well job done...

Went to Halfords for a stat... £18 8O How much?!

Went to Nissan £13... That suprised me.

The only problem was Nissan did not have a gasket, so back to Halfords for some gasket paper, but alas... "No mate don't do that anymore, try this sealent... £4.45 a tube 8O "

So off to local motorshop 99p for a sheet of gasket paper... Fitted and running.

Now she heats up quicker and the heating is much warmer... :lol:

Good to have a tinker with her as well.

the genuine nissan stat i beleive is a lower temperature and works better! it is also a better fit in the housing, so a good choice!
