Hi,
I'm fairly sure that I need to change the ECM on my 1999 Terrano 2, 2.7 tdi. Could anyone tell me about any recoding that may have to be carried out and how to identify a correct second hand replacement ecm.

You will need to identify the ecu make and part number and obtain the same second hand, it could be a Bosch one being a later model, this will be a fairly big aluminium box either that or a Zexel, either way the name and part number will be on your existing ecu.
If you have an immobiliser with a chipped ignition key then the keys will need to be registered to the ecu or the engine will never start, or when you get the ecu make sure you have the ignition keys and barrel/immobiliser control unit etc to match from the donor car, that should be a way around having to take it to Nissan.

Terrano ecm

Thanks for that Jeremy,
Perhaps you could advise me on the following,
Does the immobilser prevent the engine from cranking when the key is turned?
My problems started when I attempted to start the car , I noticed that the glow lamp and engine malfunction lamp were not illuminated. This turned out to be the ecm relay not pulling in. I discovered that the supply to the relay from the fuses and ignition switch was ok, but the negative ecm relay coil supply was missing. I downloaded some electrical info from the web site and realised that the ecm relay negative wire came from the ecu / ecm
To get round this I pulled out the ecm relay and brought two wires to a switch which I mounted on the dashboard. This got the vehicle going although the malfunction light remained on. The car ran ok with this bodge in place untill a few days ago when it refused to start.
Engine turns over ok but it will not fire.
About 3 months ago the remote locking stopped working and since then we have unlocked / locked the car by putting the key into the lock.

The immobiliser won’t stop the engine from turning over.

Have you checked the earthing to the ecu and the ignition positive supply, the permanent battery supply, the one switched on by the relay after, think there is also another supply during cranking for a start signal, are they all still ok?

Dont think the door locking is anything to do with it.
