Hi there some of you will have heard about my alternator probs so today i orderd a new one and thought id be productive and take all the belts of as i have new ones waiting i had a look and am i correct in thinking that the viscous fan will have to be removed to get the old belts off and the new ones on?If so does the rad need to come out to get the fan out?

Yes you do have to take both off :thumbs

They are both the same size :augie :thumbs

Just slacken off ya alternator & power steering pump :thumbs

No need to remove anything :thumbs

mignt need to remove the fan but that is only a few bolts depending what size the fan is as a belt wouldn't fit over mine:nenau

no the fan is simple mate it is just bolted onto the water pump by 10mm nuts iirc 6 or 8 of them nowt else required to get the fan off

You don't remove the fan to change your belts, if it doesn't slip over the fan its the wrong one! I've done all three by the roadside....

I agree with Lacroupade, do several blades at a time and rotate the fan as you go, the belt is smaller than the diameter of the fan, so you do it a bit at a time.

didnt think of that lol :thumbs

and for god's sake do all three at the same time. Often, when one goes, it rips off or btreaks one of the others at the same time - which is what happened to me on the A470 on a cold wet welsh evening...:(

and keep your old ones in the boot as spares if they look OK. you never know.....

I keep mine next to the jack in the small compartment in the boot/nearside.

I agree with Lacroupade, last one I did was in Ikea's car park in Malaga - just slip the belt over 2 or 3 blades, rotate the fan, over 2 or 3 more blades - job done.

Cheers guys im just waiting for the alternator to arrive i hate being without a motor! Is the vac pump easy enough to change over on the alternator any tips or tricks for doing that?
