Hi please someone help!!
I am on my third Terrano now and I have experienced a fault with the rear axle, after driving some miles approx 30 the axle/diff is getting very very hot, then when turning corners slowly there is what appears to be scuffing noises, I am told that the diff is locking/breaking up. So I have located and got another axle although from a 2.7 I understand they are the same. The replacement axle is very very rusty and all ancileries are siezed on and bolts shearing. So how difficult is it to take old diff out and replace with the diff from rusty axle??? is it easy and does the diff need to wound up and torqued?? Or do I persavear with rusty axle and take a chance, please help. I intend to attempt all this over a pit in a friends garage with all relevant equipment on Monday coming. Thanks

Sounds like it may well have the wrong oil in the diff.

Needs to be 80w/90 API GL5 LSD oil. The LSD bit is critical, many people including dealers get this wrong. I should certainly try this before going into changing the diff/axle.

If you do have to change the diff, just the diff can be changed. You need to remove the half shafts and then undo the diff carrier. The carriers can then be swapped. All the critical settings will remain untouched as long as you just swap the diffs complete in their carriers.
