When I lock my car I get a loud noise, it sounds like the lock solenoids engaging and dis-engaging rapidly for maybe 2 seconds. The doors do lock but occasionally the driver's door inside handle does not open the door and I have to open the window and use the oustide handle. I think it may be something to do with the driver's door mechanism, I seem to recall I may have replaced a cable possibly on that door.

Any pointers as to how to locate/check which door is causing the problem? Might it be something that would show in the fault codes (I don't have a code reader at present).

I do have the interior door panel off the driver's side door so will be looking there first.

Sounds like a door lock is on the way out - possible broken door loom wire broken- you should be able to hear which one is doing the clicking its most likely not the master lock that I think is usually the drivers door.

It is not just one door. Certainly NS an OS front. Must check the others.

Thanks for your prompt replies. Given that 4 of the 8 threads in this section since 2015 had been started by me I wasn't holding my breath.

I've experienced this on the Terrano a few times and most of the time it is due to something stopping the full range of movement of the central locking lever on the door.

Once it was due to the cowling around the handle coming forwards in the door card and the other time was due to me incorrectly installing one after swapping a mechanism from a working door

So, having driven with the door trim off for a week, I finally got to have a look at the problem again.

Indeed the door lock mechanism is the same as the rear with the child lock lever cut off. I tried moving it both ways a few times and left in the appropriate postion. I will see if that has rectified the opening the door from the inside issue, it may be that it was sligfhtly out of position.

With regard to the noise on locking. It would seem it does not make it when locking is activated using the dash board button, only when using the remote key fob which is a simple push button to lock and another to unlock. Any pointers as to what to look for further? I am leaving the door trim off for the time being while I find time to mess with it. The passenger side door trim will have to come off so I can fit the pair to the loudspeaker I have just installed on the driver's side.

The rear doors and tailgate locks do not seem to be cycling on locking, just the front doors with the key fob.

The key hole is on the passenger side (Actually I should try locking/unlocking with that). does that mean the master lock is on that side?

So, with the advent of lockdown and having been driving around for three months (OK not driving around the last 6 weeks) with the drivers door trim removed, I am returning to this problem.

As stated previously, it dow not make the noise when locked with the locking button on the central dash, it does make the noise when I lock with the key fob. I cannot recall whether or not it makes the noise when I use the key in the nearside door.

I have now had a brief look at the workshop manual. P24 Section BL.
It refers to BCM and gives a terminal number. What does BCM refer to? (Edit found it, it is Body Control Module)

I plan to dismantle the left side front door, will I find the same as in the right side door?
