i usually listen out for that sort of noise as tappets are a sign of wear.
theres no way ive missed it with the fan noise, so my question is how the f... does it come back from the garage making that noise when it didnt exist the previous day????

thats what i thought.
have checked oil, its down but half full....would say fair enough, but before went into the arage, the only noise was from belt...i dont understand how all of a sudden that can appear from having y belts done??

Ok that's a tappet.

Unsure if they are adjustable or hydraulic

It's quite loud tho. Have u checked oil level ?

Could be camshaft wear tho...

I'd change the oil first. Try holding it at 3000 rpm for a few mins it might just be a hydraulic adjuster not quite full of oil or full of sludge

Right they are hydraulic, so its probably one of ya lifters sticking. Try holding it at 3000 rpm when warmed up for a few minutes, it might disapear.

Change oil etc.

Other than that take them all out and flush them

warmed it up and kept it at 3000 rpm....hasnt made a difference.
if need to change the oil will do so but 2 questions that are in my head are:

1. with them being that loud has the engine been damaged

2. how can the tappet noise appear like that only and immediately after being in thwe garage?? have they gone joyriding and fu...d it up?

It can appear any time, and its not damaged, just annoying.

I doubt there is damage - just get some decent oil in there-it should be full, not half full, you can also add an additive that will treat the tappets so you may get away with not having to have them adjusted.

It could just simply be coincidence im afraid, although I have to admit, it is very loud and usually tappets GET louder over time-but that's usually down to oil and maintenance.

Personally, id get the oil topped up or changed (use decent oil that will treat the tappets) and see how it is.

You COULD go back to the garage, point at it and say "what the f*ck is that noise?" and make them look at it, but you probably wont get anywhere. Do what you can yourself, then maybe the cause will become apparent..

well thats a relief at least, didnt want to do all the work on it and then get rid cos engine gone.
just strikes me as very peculiar and a coincidence indeed that that its only been like that since coming back from the garage,

will see if ive any oil to top it up and might go back to the garage although if they have done anything will deny it.
ive had cars with noise like that before, but usuaslly much quieter and ive heard it.

the only time ive heard an engine that noisy with tappets is when it was out of oil and ready to explode

you know what...the more I think about it, the more I think you should at least ring the garage. tell them you had it in for belts-no noise, now you have noise. Tell them you're not happy, but you want them to look at it FOC in case its something they have done.

Then at least you have made the call, sooner rather than later.

im going to go there now, the fct i can hear it when in the car its bad...and i know for a fact it wasnt there when it went it.
they will prob deny it but ive filled oil up....1/2 liter andd no change. with that little oil gone shudnt of made a diff

I'd just change the oil for some thin stuff do a few hundred miles in it and change the oil
Again for standard stuff. Avoid using a flush as they can get rid of a load of good carbon and stuff.

Other than that you'll have to get the lifters replaced mate

It can't be anything the garage have done

im inclined to agree, I cant figure in my head, how the garage could have caused anything. But, that being said, get them to look anyway.

well, been to the garage, their verdict is the timing chain - and the tappet and vibrating sound is reasoning that its caused from replacing the belts, which now that they are tight have made the timing chain loose and the vibration from it is causing the tappets to rattle??

coincidentally they do not touch timing chains....funny that.

so, looks like if i want to get fixed will have to get timing chain, and might as well get waterpump as well.....all depends on cost of getting it fixed and if its worth it....know all to well once something like this starts it could mean all for naught

bollocks.

although they could be right about the timing chain, what mileage is the car? On those Petrols, I think the timing chain generally "goes" at around 100k miles is, but Rick is the expert on those engine and he may well be able to advise you. I'm not 100% convinced that fitting new aux belts would affect the timing chain, but Rick will probably know (Solarman)

hmmmm....

Rick will have the definitive answer as said. But absolute bollox on the belt tightness affecting the timing chain

Never go to this garage again.

rick did say about timing chain kit when i first said about the probs.
it was garage that said the belts which is fair enough if the fan was catching them and one was "slanty"
if have to get timing chain so be it as figure rick knows what hes on about....and then its down to finding someone who can do it and the cost??.......but i dont know if that would affect tappets and still dosnt explain why the tappets made no noise until it came back from garage,
personally i think theyve buggered it up somehow, and its starting to make me think, am i going to throw my money away?
its done 94000 miles, good car with niggles, was tidying it up and looking forward to a cpl of years with it.
but if somehow they have done something and the engine is clapping out then im up the swannee, as my partner is 5 months pregnant and weve just moved, so i dont have any time or money to spare on costly repairs that leaves us without transport

i wouldnt touch that garage again with a 10 foot bargepole, ive got ripped off from them and swear that the car is worse since going in!
so much for neighbours reccommendations!

just hope can find a decent garage and that the car is repairable.

come to think of it, last cpl times weve been in to pay, they havent been able to give us peciepts as their machine was down...i believed them but now im not so sure.....

the timing chain will have slacked a bit, so that affects the timing and the tappets etc, just a ball ache coincidence but as said, that garage are wrong im sure. I hope Rick can shed some light onto the situation-but I doubt very much its bad, so don't worry too much. Timing chain was probably due anyway, so once you have a new one fitted plus water pump and oil, you'll probably be looking at a tidy engine.

Rick knows his stuff, are you close to him?

lol, utter bollocks!!! Use a f*cking pen and paper!!

stay well away!!
