Pull your sunvisor down. Instructions should be on the back.

dont have a handbook on the car, will check sun visor tho

If you have automatic front hubs then no, unless you have engaged them earlier. More on this later...

If Manual hubs, then these need to be engaged prior to the start of the journey. If engaged then yes.

If fixed hubs ie permanently connected then yes ok.

I hope this helps.

aaaaargh not really sure about which type of hubs on it ! think id better play safe in future & pull up when needing 4wd its less expensive than a new gearbox!!

Go under neath, rotate the front prop shaft +/-45 degrees, if you can,

Keep rotating it, and if it locks then you have auto hubs, if it won't rotate when you start, then they are fixed front hubs.

If the front prop shaft keeps rotating, then either you have Manual hubs and they are not engaged, of Auto hubs that need some attention.... ie broken..:thumb2

no can crawl under, though side steps might limit access, combined with err personal
dimensions.

attack from off side as front prop is more to right of vehicle.

OK if you have manual hubs then it'll have some kind of knob or handle to turn in the centre of the wheels to lock and unlock the hubs.

What year is your truck? pre 2001 almost certainly auto lockeing hubs. After 2001 could be fixed or auto. A photo on here could help.

Check out the downloads section within Quick links as I'm sure there are some instructions for 4wd on there.

As a rule of thumb I tend to switch between 2H and 4H at no more than 30mph to be on the safe side. Also for 4L you need to be stopped and I also put gears in to Neutral too.

I used to be too fussy when I had autolockers on mine, as soon as I selected 2wd I stopped and reversed back a few feet. In fact all that happens if you dont reverse is the front transmission will be turning harmlessly. Reverse when it is safe and easy to do so not straight away. Also when you set off in 4wd don't snatch at the drive by setting off too quickly. Set off gently so there is less stress on the transmission and hubs.

i have auto hubs and they can be engaged when on the move it says so on the sun visor and iv done it thats the whole point of them the manual hubs on the other hand must be engaged at some point usually just when you need them it means getting out in the snow or mud so not as good as my autos lol

comparing my mk4's fixed hubs with my old mk2's auto hubs, the 4wd instructions
are simplier.

certainly on the move is possible with either, into 4 high though autos might give
an of putting clunk. that said once engaged in any given 4wd journey going back
to 2wd and then 4wd again doesnt disengage them providing you dont reverse
whilst in 2 wd.

with a fixed hub, all of the front end, the half and prop shafts are spinning when
car is moving so only dog clutch in transfer box has to engage, far less of a clunk
as the rear prop should be going at same rate.

however with either type if moving make sure you are not accelerating as if theres
any slip due to the ground conditions this coming together in the transfer will be
a more stressful affair for the car and you.

cheers for the help guys , the previous keeper decided to remove the sticker on the sun visor (very handy) mines 2001 2.7tdi se+ think ill play safe stop when wanting 4wd ,too much to loose if it doesnt work out!

you should see wording autohub on the hub if it is, might need to remove
hub cap if fitted.

To be honest you can use fixed and Auto Lockers in the same way. Just remember to treat them gently when setting off (don't snatch) and if changing between 2H and 4H on the fly don't accelerate at the same time but keep the speed down. Check out these links that are in the downloads section too. Also remember to reverse a short distance when it is safe to do so. Above all do not use 4wd on hard surfaces, you'll feel the steering getting tighter if the transmission starts winding up but also be aware that steering will feel different in 4wd too.

Above all don't be worried and use it! more damage is done through lack of use.
