Ok
So I changed the caliper on the front passenger side, without removing the complete caliper. Now I find that the damn thing is still not releasing so was going to change, clean, grease the slide pins. How do I remove them, please?

I do know its a common fault and an easy fix to avoid the garage solution, which is usually a new caliper, but not sure how you extract it....might need to just whack it with an appropriately sized drift....

if the pin is seized, and wont budge, heat it up and it will release and come out, had to do mine awhile back, if you need a new pin let me now i should have some second hand ones. :thumb2:naughty

Thanks ,tezzer. Am I right in thinking the rubber dust covers need to be removed to allow access to the pins,or am I totally wrong? I do have another caliper which I could practice on. Not too sure exactly how to even try removing them.

I haven't done this for ages but if i remember right:
remove the rubbers and there are 'flat's on the pin you can get an open spanner on' then gently work the pin with plenty of penatrating oil unitl it starts to move, i cleaned them with fvery fine wet and dry and cleaned the holes with cottong buds and never had an issue again!

Great info, thanks to you all. I'll try that with my tame "mechanic" tomorrow. Should have done it first and saved €50,oh well, you live and learn.

Stick a socket on the pin and the other end of the driver into your cordless drill:sly
Squirt some goosh down it and drill forwards and backwards:thumbs
Simples

Where can I get some goosh? Halfords? LOL

i reckon it's something they brew out back in darkest wales myself.:augie

Still haven't got the brakes sorted. Checked the slide pins and they were ok on the passenger side so we looked at the driver's side and think one of the pins was a little bent. We replaced that with a good one but still have a pull to the right under braking, not much but it is there. Other work was replacing the passenger side front shock and still to do is the trailing arm bushing. Have to say after doing the driver's side slide pins the pull to the right was a lot less than previously. Wondering if the replacement of the trailing arm bushing might sort it or if the tracking may need to be done after replacing the bushing. Any thoughts?

brakes

Hi Liam

It was my understanding that as a rule of thumb the problem brake is the one opposite to the pull on the steering.

So in your case it could be the left hand side that is weaker and engaging with the disc later than the right hand side.

paulp

ps good luck with the truck

Funny you should say that,Paul. Initial problem was n/s front not releasing but with the caliper changed,it pulled to the left while driving but right when braking. After changing one slide pin on the o/s it is a lot better. Will give it a few days and see if things improve.
