Guys just a quick question, why am I getting a smell like burning clutch on my automatic it only happens after going up big hills?is this a sign of my autobox going bang?

Cheers

Stuart.

hmm..id have a word with Briggie, I think he had that issue when going up hill (and flooring it)

mine was a slipping belt , dunno about any other possible causes , cos it aint got a clutch to burn out ..... brakes perhaps :nenau.... or like i said slipping belt ...... rick might know any other causes

Right don't think its a belt as they are all new and properly adjusted the autobox oil is needing changed had it in the garage last week and my mechanic said he could drain it but not refil it as he didn't have a funnel that would fit in the dip stick hole! Is he speaking bollocks or is that how it needs filling?I'm hoping it is just the oil needing changed!

thats how they filled mine i believe ..... but check your belts ... they do become loose , i had 2 new ones fitted by the rac .... a week later one had burnt out  your atf should be a nice red colour , if its brown or discoloured you have a problem

It's certainly not red it's more like brown it's not good I have the oil in the boot will get it done Wednesday the smell only happens after a thrash or a big hill I really need to change the oil, it's not the brakes as there would be a smell all the time.

Briggie when I'm driving at say 60 mph and I take my foot off the throttle then start to feed in the power there's a kindof slip for a second before the truck starts accelerating is this just the torque converter or is this what happend to yours before it broke?

yes , but to a worse extent ....... ask rick ( solarman 216 ) im sure he will advise better but i think youve cooked your atf

Defo check the ATF fluid, should smell sweet and a nice red colour. If it's brown and not sweet smelling get it changed quick.
Also check your rear brakes, may be one side has stuck causing the brakes to overheat.

Jim

Ohoh best get the oil changed then it's done 70 000 miles according to the odo and it's never been changed by the looks of it I'd say the damage is probaly done now :(

lubeguard atf protectant might be a good idea too .... ive got it in mine :thumb2 , but dont drive it if its got those symptoms untill you replace the atf ffs .... unless you have a spare gearbox hanging around

Ok will look into that im not planning on driving it again until the fluid is changed :doh

Right got 10 litres of ATF made a filling device out of garden hose a funnel and a silicone gun nozzle :D the garage is gonna drain it for me to fill it tommoz :thumb2

So i should take it for a drive to get the fluid hot drain it then once i have replaced the amount of fluid thats removed i need to start the engine and go through the gears then check the level again and top up if needed have i got to do anything else?

yea have a cuppa while u wait for em to drain it lol

Ok thats the gear oil changed now :thumb2 took it out for a drive and its much better now the oil that came out was like burst oil

just keep a check on the atf level regularly , and colour etc , happy it seems to be sorted :thumb2

Yeah i will do it only took 3.5l or there abouts so i have enough for another couple of changes aswell :thumb2 gonna do the rear diff oil but only have 2l of lsd oil best get more as i read that some take 1.3l and others take 2.8l so not gonna chance it till i get another litre lol,but yeah the gear box goes through the gears alot smoother now :D
