While out yesterday my truck was puffing out blue smoke, burning engine oil as you could smell it.
Seemed to be worse after we had done a lane so the engine had been working hard, then back to road driving it would smoke quite bad for a few minutes then clear.
I have been getting a puff of blue smoke on start up so I assumed it was the valve stem oil seals.
Never been this bad though.done an oil change last week using the same grade oil but different make, could this be making it worse:nenau
Not over filled with oil, checked that first.
New valve stem oil seals are going to be fitted ASAP but it got me thinking about piston rings and big end wear.
Anybody else had simular issues and what they did to rectify it
Cheers

It could possibly be the turbo as they can go very quick sometimes on the renaults you don't know there is a problem until the engine runs off

Have got a boost gauge to fit would this tell me if the turbo is on its way out :nenau

pop your intercooler off and have a look inside, if it is taking in oil thru the intake it will be evident in there, easy job. :thumb2

Had a rover 75 and that was dropping the oil on the exaust side so not always seen in inter cooler

I've got 10w40 mineral in it
Was a bit of oil in the intercooler but no more than any other I have had
Hopefully found the problem and cured it.
The short rubber hose into the turbo actuator had perished and split.
Changed that and fitted the boost gauge
Will give it a good run tomorrow night and see how it goes

Just took the truck for a thrash down the A38 and it doesn't seem to be smoking like the other day:thumbs
Still getting a puff of blue smoke when I start it up and the oil burning smell but not as bad as it was.
Turbo is peaking at around 10 psi and the truck feels a lot more responsive.
Still think the valve stem oil seals need changing but if it stays like it is I can put it off a while longer.

My last T2 used to kick out some blue smoke on start up & when I opened it up (I got told off old forum members) it did use the tiniest bit of oil but nothing that worried me & it went like poop off a shovel:lol I'm sure it was the valve seals that were the cause as the intercooler didn't fill up with oil after I fitted a catch tank & at 70K & the performance it had I didn't think it could have been the piston rings. This one i've got now also kicks out just a touch of blue/white smoke on start up but it's only ever the first start up of the day & at times it can sit on my drive for 2-3 days without moving:augie get nothing on the road tho apart from a bit of black smoke when flooring it & taking the revs to 3.5-4K

hi try 5/30 :thumbs

That's thinner than 10w40 so would burn more if its passing the seals into cylinders.

Worked the truck quite hard on a few lanes tonight and it's still kicking out some blue smoke when I first get back to normal driving on the road.
Don't seem as bad as before but is still there.
Exosteve has had a word with his mechanic genius and he has told me he will fit them for me at a good price if I provide the seals:thumbs
Can't be fairer than that.

I don't think I will go to the expence of fitting the trap but it seems a very good idea to clean the intercooler internals. I will do that at the weekend:thumb2

can just by pass the blow by valve and fit a catch pot onto the crankcase breather to stop oil being pulled into the intercooler.
