bumper, covered in wax and messy, can I use petrol to remove this easily? I need to get the bumper back to bare plastic ready for painting....

i am going to try a dab of petrol today, and i will check this chewing gum remover too, great idea that thanks.

how about a Kim and aggie solution, hot water and a scrubbing brush:lol daft as it sounds it mat well work. Even try a little bicarb and scrub that on with a wet brush.

How are you getting them back to bare plastic, surely you'd be removing the paint anyway so whats the problem?

havent tried anything yet, other things came up this weekend.

my bumpers are full of wax and presumably "back to black" crap. I need to remove this to get the original bumper back. I will then pre treat it with bumper preperation spray then paint with black bumper paint.

I havebeen told to try a little petrol to clean the wax off. Elbow grease is out of the question, tried that, and its too hard to shift, what I need is a reasonably easy way to remove the crap. I dont mind a bit of hard work, but i need great results from the start.

I am going to look at the chewing gum remover also, hopefully will have a look at this, next weekend!

I cant quite see from the picture as its to small but if they'r not painted make sure you test any solution on a part of the bumper you cant see, just in case the bumper melts. I melted a customers bumper once. oops.

sorry guys, bumper is sort of half unpainted and half body coloured. The body coloured part is fine, but the bumper has been waxed to death, and is mostly a mess of grey and black. In my avatar, the bumper looks great, but thats only because it snowed and the snow cleaned it up good!

Didn't realise you had the 'economy' bumpers LOL! Why not rub them down and spray them the right shade of silver?

ah yes mate, i think originally they were grey (or black) over body colour, in this case Aubergine!!

I did test a small area with Hammerite Metal paint lol, and so far it hasnt peeled off, but i have since bought some proper bumper prep spray and black bumper spray!

if you get a plastic primer kit (holts used to do one) it contains a cleanr that takes the plastic to a level the primer will take on. I usd it loads of times, worked well on mirror housings and bumpers.

Personally whilst I cant identify by the smell I suspect the "cleaner" is just a bog standard thinner type solvent diluted to a degree that wont melt the plastic................but then Im a bit cynical when it comes to buying fancy products :naughty
