Just collected this rather nice 3.0l
Was diagnosed by the aa with broken gearbox. It starter and tried to move but loads of resistance then large band moved forwards 2" then bang again and so on.Only just managed to get on the trailer.
So question is what was wrong with it?
Answers on postcard please

knackered diff? locked front hubs? knackered driveshafts? I know nowt about gearboxes, but aren't the 3.0l troublesome with regards gearboxes?

Rear shoes liners come away from shoes so 1side starts to jam and the lsd trys to slip:augie happened on mine:eek:

Idea

Wound up front shafts - driving in 4 x 4 in the dry and doing a tight turn

Check to see if the transfer box is working or not first - physically check not just wiggle the lever then disconnect front and rear props one at a time trying it in 2wd and 4wd in each gear and see what it does - you should be able to narrow it down to either in the box or at either axle/diff, then explore from their.

I had shoe linings come away too but didn't get the problems geoff describes but it is certainly possible

Put the transfer box in neutral, and run the main box through the gears, see how noisy it is.

Yes but i cant spell tranfir box:doh

Go and play with your gear knob...:augie

Now is the time to remove the rear prop shaft, or put the vehicle on 4 axle stands, and see what rotates when in 2 wheel drive, then 4 wheel drive.

My best guess...
Broken rear half shaft.

I can go with that, sounds good, did not think about rear shaft as have not done one as yet, probably should not have said that:doh, Rick

Was broken front prop wouldnt drive even in 2wd as its got fixed hubs.Removed the locked hubs and drives fine just need to fit new front prop make sure there are no other issues.

Sounds like a result then :thumbs

Nah something not right here, in two wheel front prop will not be driven, now with fixed hubs drive is other way, wheels driving diff and prop shaft, yep just answered my own argument, well done cnc, cheap fix sounds like a good profit in line, Rick

Great result, but what alarms me is that the AA said the gearbox was broken, so who was the original owner?

I feel sorry for them, when the fix could have been really cheap, and we all know that front prop shafts are vulnerable on these vehicles with fixed front hubs, because they no longer fit the grease nipples.:doh
