Hi Guys 8)

Was driving home and just for a few seconds it lost power (like fuel starvation) then kicked back in.......then 5 mins later did the same, then kicked back in.............few mins later did the same then kicked back in. Then it got more and more often until no power at all so I pulled onto the hard shoulder and it wouldnt and hasn't started since.

The AA said it was the fuel pump in the tank  I have just pulled out the thing in the tank and I cant see a pump

It turns over but no coughing, spluttering nothing just turns over freely??

Any ideas, please????

Thank you

mine done that when i first started using biodiesel i worked on it for ages trying to sort out but my mate who is a rally driver/mechanic said 99% certain it was the fuel filter so i changed it and 100% perfect just a thought

Had a tractor do that couple of months back, crap had got into the inline filter from the tank. I was heading down the field with a full load on and it just died. Fired it up again and coughed and splutterd but then cleared it self. It then gradually start to do it more and more untill i got back to the yard. Changed filter and of she went.

I know a tractor is slighty different to a terrano but i'd definatly try the fuel filter first!

Hope this helps!

thought pump was under bonnet (lhs near front corner of block) squareish box type thing (now thats a technical explanation  )

Change the filter though (also i've been advised that tdi doesn't have mini filter (mine didn't) if one was fitted it'd be on pump too under the banjo bolt on the fuel inlet pipe)

Good luck keep us informed on what it is (hopefully was!)

You could also try the engine stop solinoid valve, ontop of the injector pump...

Sounds like it is more likely to be is than anything else.

Make sure the wire is not loose or anything silly like that..

Just a thought. had one fail like that once...

4x4xford,

There is no fuel lift pump on the engine or in the tank, the injection pump alone sucks all the fuel from the tank.
I would change your fuel filter and go from there.
Is your engine check light on / flashing ?

Hi Jeremy. I shall check the stuff that has been advised and change the filter. I dont think engine light came on, if Im sure it didnt?? I have taken the fuel pipe off to the pump and pressed the plunger and fuel flew out!

If a new filter doesn’t do the trick, check the banjo bolt on the supply pipe at the front of the injection pump; some tdi engines have a gauze built in to the banjo bolt itself.

I think that it's only the 2.7TD that has the MIni filter Jermery

Some TDIs have a gauze in the banjo bolt itself, where as the TD has a min filter below the banjo fitting, under a spring in the pump.

I think I am going to have to find the time to take some pictures of it.

the mini filter on some tdi's is in banjo? is it easy to spot? i've had mine off but think i only looked down into the pump and fished around in there

You shouldn’t miss it if you look at the hole in the bottom of the banjo bolt that you remove.

I think I'll of looked in there, thought it might of been in the hose/washer thing (don't u just love my technical descriptions  )

Saying that its not hard or long to check it so I'll have a look in there next time im under the bonnet just incase.

Not a bad idea because there has been some confusion over this point for a while i have read several threads in the past with members confused over this point but as you say if some TDI have them this is understandable

ITS ALIVE!!!

So I changed the fuel filter and removed the banjo and checked the mini filter - still nothing!! Cracked off the fuel pipe at the injectors and small amounts of fuel were coming out??? So Id got fuel.

Thought then it must be electrical so I set about all the plugs, fuses and relays with a test light....................there was no power to the connections on the back of the pump!!! traced it back to the plug connector to find the power supply had sheared through.  So! with little room i soldered them back together and it started first time

I think the supply cable was routed wrong so the wires were on a 90 degree angle and with vibration just snapped.
