If your thinking ABS take the fuse out and go for a run round... if still same then not ABS :nenau

What year T2 you got? Do you know the last time your disks / pads were changed?
Also have you checked your brake fluid level?

i had this problem, replaced a leaky brake cylinder and bled the whole brake system, hasn't done it since

If you look under your steering wheel and to the right the fuse board is there, pull the cover of and all the fuses/what each does is wrote on the back of the cover... one for the ABS is deffo there as I take mine out in bad snow!!! :augie

If yours aint got the sticker on to say which is which I'll go check on mine for you :thumbs

Why do you take it out in bad snow? Is it not better to have ABS in the snow?

Hiya mate,

Firstly my motor especially when it snows is used alot on country lanes, steep inclines / declines usually not gritted to any great extent.

Reason for removing the ABS fuse is that snow is a "deformable" so basically it will change its shape to surround your tyre.

With deformable surfaces, the car will actually stop faster if you lock the wheels and let the surface build up in front of the tyres. ABS prevents wheel lock which decreases the surface build-up and, therefore, increases the stopping distance on snow / sand / gravel etc
ABS really only helps you maintain stability (not stopping) by keeping the wheels rotating with the surface.... wheels carrying on rotating... steep decline country lane.... (you get the picture!!!) :doh

Obviously the main breaking in snow is using gears and not driving like a tw*t... but ABS is anti-lock braking... nowt to do with stopping better in the snow! :thumbs

Abs saved my bacon in the recent bad weather while approaching a que at a T junction as it allowed me to steer around obstacles while keeping my foot still firmly planted on the brake. if my abs was off that day i would have definitely crashed.

By the way this is only my opinion.... I'm in no way saying you should remove your fuse... :augie :augie :augie

That is a really clear explaination regarding issues with ABS, I see what you mean regarding the build up of material in front of a stationary wheel.

Some cars you are able to turn off the ABS and traction control or ESP
(Electronic Stability Programme).
If you fit a switch to your car or remove the fuse, and you are involved in an insurance claim, you might find that the insurance people don't pay up.

If I was removing the fuse, I would replace it with the same value that had been pre-blown... Then the fuse could have failed without you knowing it.:augie

Doesn't affect me, mine hasn't got abs :doh

If this is only happening in wet/slippery conditions then its probably just normal ABS operation....you should feel a low frequency 'crunchy' vibration through the pedal and a bit of gravelly noise to accompany it. If so thats perfectly normal.

And as Chip says below, the main point of ABS is that it keeps the vehicle steerable under heavy braking, as well as preventing skidding, so while it might take a tad longer to stop, its a feck sight safer, even in snow.

BUT if you are having odd braking symptoms in the dry, then check discs/pads as you suggest, but FIRST, whip off the rear drums and check the state of the shoes....often neglected and if they are shot they can break up and clog the drum and the distribution sensors can incorrectly detect a braking force which it then applies to all wheels....

I had exactly that fault on mine and at one point it was putting the brakes on all by itself at 70mph....that was 'fun'....

Abs saved my bacon in the recent bad weather while approaching a que at a T junction as it allowed me to steer around obstacles while keeping my foot still firmly planted on the brake. if my abs was off that day i would have definitely crashed.

Hi
thanks will try that when i get the car back. tookin for new clutch. think rear shoes need changing as handbrake folds onto back seat.its quite a hard thump when braking and feels as tho car wont stop.my navaras had abs but never felt like this.

Where have you taken it for the clutch ?
What sort of price are you looking at ?
How many miles have you done on the present one?

I'm not sure if mine is starting to slip on the odd hill when I'm giving it some stick.

definitely not ABS I'd say.....sounds a lot like the rear shoes have disintegrated so check them soon. easy job, just jack up, remove rear wheels and use an 8mm (I think) bolt in the holes provided to ease the drums off.

Normally you would slacken off the adjuster nut on the handbrake first, 10mm AF spanner, to allow the drums to come off. You need to remove the centre console, 4 pozidrive screws and disconnect the connectors towards the rear.

Yes you will need 2 x 8 mm bolts to ease off the brake drums.
Also check the handbrake cable as it enters the back plate, they corrode here and the outer part of the cable may have crushed allowing excessive play in the handbrake.

The auto adjusters are not that effective, and need to be manually adjusted at least once a year.:nenau

easy to check your clutch, hand brake on hard, select 5th high, floor the throttle, slide foot off clutch peddle, engine should stall very quick, for safety I put right foot on brake and heel on throttle, if engine continues to run but heavy labor clutch will last a while, if engine spins fairly easily clutch is about shot, Rick
