I've just had the 'Troll MOT'd, serviced, the front brake pads and disks replaced and the caliper guide pins removed, cleaned up and greased both front and back. On the move, the brakes work silently and as well as brakes ever work in a Patrol. I'm about as convinced of that as I can be.

All, however, is not *quite* hunky dory. As an old fart who, in the dim and distant, used to drive grot boxes, I've always had a habit of standing on the brakes when I first get into a car, just to make sure that the pedal fights back. Starting maybe a few months back, very occasionally (once or twice a week?) when I stand on the brake pedal before starting the engine, a kind of (quite loud) grinding noise comes from somewhere at the front which I can feel being fed back through the pedal. Most days, it doesn't do it. When it does do it, it only does it once. If I pump the pedal again, it behaves normally - no noise and a solid feel, exactly as you'd expect. After I've started the engine, the brakes behave normally. I've no reason to suppose that there's a problem with the brake master cylinder and even if there were, I cannot imagine it making this kind of noise.

My experience of taking motors to bits and diagnosing faults comes mainly from the days when cars had drum brakes, distributors and carburetors and other such ancient stuff - so I can only speculate about whether the ABS system might cause this behaviour - or even indeed about whether the behaviour is even abnormal. The ABS light on the dash is, though, behaving normally.

In my experience, when something makes an unexpected noise or behaves abnormally, it usually means that something is about to break and that worrying about it is probably justified. Have i got a problem or am I just being paranoid? If you think the 'Troll has a problem, what do you think it might be?

Thoughts?

Could be that your brake sliders are getting a bit stiff and in need of some grease.

ABS is unlikely to be the cause IMHO - theres no real mechanical parts apart from the pump and thats unlikely to make the sort of noise you describe especially with the engine off.

Errr ...... that's what I originally thought. That's why I had them all removed, freed off and greased (see original post) :)

engine/ignition on or off when it makes this funny noise? (which like you I would have put down to something ABS related had you not been stationary!). And your statement implies it only happens when your foot is firmly ON the brake. Does it do it with light pressure or only when you stand on the brake?

TERRA, lets assume he has got engine or ignition ON, he's braking and the ABS sensor somehow is being fooled into thinking the roadwheel wheel is actually moving/skidding....why wouldn't it apply ABS? How does it know when its finally stopped after ABS has kicked in? Does it get a signal from the speed sensor, ABS sensor or somewhere else?...

It happens, occasionally, if I stand on the brake BEFORE starting the engine (at least, I think that's when it happens).

Oops, how did I manage to duplicate the reply ...............

could it be a lubrication prob with pedal/pivot pin??

sounds like doesn't it...could be some form of corrosion or stickiness that frees itself after you've trod on it once....?
