Hi All,

I saw a thread here a short while ago about getting the brake drums off but i can't find it. :doh

In the past I have changed brake shoes with success but tonight I felt I had been out of the game a bit long.

I jacked the back end up, took the wheel off and saw a strange concave bit where I expected to find a nut. At this point I decided to put the wheel back on and ask you good people some advice as I'm not sure what I'm looking at here.

How do you undo it? is it a left hand thread and do I need a special tool? :nenau

Cheers

Rich

as far as I am aware the drums are only held on by the wheel never seen any different on a T2, so just whack it with a hammer while pulling with your hand at 180 deg if this does not work then remove two front hub bolts and screw these into the threaded holes on the drum hammering the drum while you do it, the drums attain a wear lip so the shoes do not want to pass easily, best if you can grind this off before replacement, do not worry you would need to hit the drums very seriously hard to damage them, I have not damaged one yet and have hit with a claw hammer all I can give it on all sorts of motors, Rick

and do remember to slack off the handbrake cable (see the workshop download on that).

Got round to doing this job today, the drums came off easily without having to release the hand break cable.:thumbs

I then realised that by seeing the shoes were not all that that different from the new ones in the box as they had almost exactly the same amount of meat on them and the drum had no wear lip and I became aware that this job had been done by he last owner fairly recently :doh

I replaced the shoes and as I was putting it all together, a mate of mine called and interested in what I was doing asked why the hell I was doing that

When I told him I suspected one of the linings had fallen off inside the drum as it made a bad noise when reversing, he said - did you try just shamfering off the leading edges of the shoes first as that's a common problem :doh:doh:doh

If the HB is adjusted correctly you do not need to do that, HB off check the tell tales on the back plate, you should not be able to push them in, tap them with a small hammer to free them off first, if they go in with HB off then HB adjusted too tight or cable problems, does not apply to 2000 on, Rick
