Am I being thick here? I've got four lovely new glow plugs to go into my 05 3.0 Terrano. Boy are they long. Feels like its starting on 3 when cold and it's always cold here in the mountains. Looked at the 2.7 download. (Ta) Whipped off the intercooler etc. But on the 3.0 its different. That buzz bar and therefore the plugs, particularly number 3 as looked at from the front of the truck are not coming out without another big piece of hard wear coming off which is I believe the turbo manifold. Number 3 sits right under it. So I bottled it there and put it all back together again. I need a hug and reassurance to go the next step and more importantly does that manifold need a replacement gasket if/when I take it off. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi, have you actually metered the No. 3 with a Multimeter, it should be a few ohms if ok, if gone, it will read open circuit.
Only consider changing it if it is open circuit.

Don't know what you need to do to remove it as I have the 2.7TD, and they are a doddle to change. No intercooler even to remove.

When on 3 working glow plugs it will start, but will be lumpy on warm up.
If 2 working, will start with more turning of the starter motor and lumpier.

If left with 1 working, I hope your battery is good.
If none working........Work from home that day:doh
It may just start with the battery at 100%

Best regards,
Rustic

I changed all four of mine last year.
As I recall, all you need a deep socket to remove them. It is not necessary to remove anything other than the intercooler and connections between the glow plugs.
Yes, they are looooong!
see post #5 here:http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10720&highlight=glow+plugs
EDIT: just remembered, there is a plastic oil seal around the top of the GP that you unscrew first to allow the socket to go in!

Thanks for the replies. Will meter them tomorrow. I like the sound of the easy start. I used to like making explosions in Chemistry lessons. Maybe it's a bit like that.

I'd be interested to know what the old ones look like when you get them out, some of mine had pieces of the ceramic tips missing!

WD40 works just as well on a diesel
Easy start does tend to degrease the top end.

OK for the odd use.
Not suitable for continued use

Don't know if its an old wives tale but they used to say that once you use easy start on a diesel then the engine becomes addicted to it and will not start without it !!

Or buy a can of easy start. David

This was tongue in cheek. I would only use it in emergencies I've had 2 cans in 35 yrs and the second is still half full. Don't have excess fuel on and keep it on low revs, makes the engine knock a bit. Don't breath it in and keep dogs well away. David.

Just changed mine on my 3.0 I removed the inlet manifold extension to get easier access, just 3 bolts and it comes away easily. Plenty of build up of crap on the EGR side!

Deep 13mm socket needed to get the old ones out.

To add to what Ray has said three of mine had part of the ceramic tips missing no wonder it didn't like the cold mornings! Replaced with standard steel ones and starts first turn now

Doh,...
I had completely forgotten I also removed the inlet assembly too!
Mine was full of gungy black crud as well, so it's a good opportunity to give it a good muck out.

Thanks again. I feel well hugged now. Plugs came out easily after I took the manifold extension off. Looked like a mouse had been chewing on the glow plugs. I have a thing about mice, its a long story.

Had a good day as also changed gearbox, transfer box and LSD oil and sorted my squeaky clutch problem. Then did an oil and filter change on Capt Limeys 3.0 Terrano.

Many hands make light work. (Cheers Cap'n)
