Bought myself a little awning for the rear end.

A cheap tarp from Decathlon. It's rubbish on the back of the car. I'm likely to replace with the rear awning that Davey Boy has as there are support poles to keep it taut.
Or a roof tent opening over the rear to provide shelter.

Oh right looks very pro in the pics, I like the bendy light too, is it copyrighted :lol

Thanks, but trust me it's crap. The bendy light was picked up in a shop in Bolton and is great. I wanted something that I can use for reading inside and also to light up the cooking area when needed. It works grand. :thumb2

Camping, and the way you do it is a very personal thing I find.
My set up is primarily for Caroline and myself. We tour a lot and cover some serious mileage, leading groups through Europe and over the French, Italian & Swiss Alps for example. It suits our staying a night or two then moving on.
Don Simon, the roof tent has proved brilliant for us. It's a South African heavy canvas type, and completely blocks out any light when inside. The awning in the photo is a 270 degree with side walls. The kids were with us for this trip and slept in there on fishing chair beds.

Does the 270 degree awning function like this?

I like the idea of full black out on the rtt too. Is it a Hannibal?

I'm not knocking your set up, far from it. Like you say you buy the kit that best suits your needs :thumb2

you can keep your tents, van and high degree of comfort for me and Maggs, not knocking your tents just not for us, Rick

I've set up my project truck for sleeping in.

Ten years ago we had just moved into the house, there was a regular camping trip with friends that my son really wanted to go to. So as money was tight we set about removing all the rear seats and placed a sheet of ply in the back supported by concrete blocks in the footwells. We then had some black material that we fastened in the windows and even fastened a cheap plastic tarp to the roof bars and used as a shelter over the tailgate. We stuck a double airbed in the back and sleeping bags on top. We managed quite easily two nights but it was heavy rain so windows were closed! We had huge amounts of condensation that took hours to clear.

So with this experience in mind I've recently got some of that plastic foil bubble wrap insulation shaped to all of the windows. The next key thing is the windows have those perspex wind deflectors fitted so the windows can all be cracked open an inch without rain coming in so there should be plenty ventilation. Third row of seats are rarely fitted so second row folded I can actually fit my airbed in the back. I've test fitted it fine but not tried a night in it yet. Want to work on the window blinds, stiffen them up with something like say hardboard and covered in dark material. Need to decide on fixings for them. I also have one of those decathlon tarps which I'm thinking of using as a shelter. I'm guessing with the ventilation and insulation I shouldn't get any condensation. What do you guys think?

We now use the folding camp beds with a self inflating 2"thick mattress :thumb2
No more cold air beds and always get a comfortable nights sleep.
