bottom radiator hose weeping

hey chaps.

after doing the work on my car this weekend and replacing the pump, the jubilee clip at the top part of the radiator hose wouldn't tighten fully. The hose is old, but I replaced the clip but the hose is still weeping at the top.

can this be fixed or do I need a new hose?:bow

If there's a bit extra just cut it cleanly with a junior hacksaw and replace that jubilee clip as it sounds ropey

not sure if there is, ill try it though. Actually that being said ill just moved the clip back as the hose is on by a good 4 inches over the pipe......!Im using a new clip too, but I think the old mark where the old clip was must be too weak for a seal...

Sounds like it's been over tightened and it's "pierced" the pipe and when tightened to that tightness again it will cause a split top open up under compression which is likely causing your weep

ok, moved back seemed to be plenty of room. Obviously very difficult to tighten the jubilee on the thicker rubber, will that be ok? I ran it for only about 5 mins or so but engine was already hot, got it to running temp just about and no leaks...

On important hoses on boats, the common practice is to fit two clips set at 180 degrees to each other.
However, a failed hose on a boat, could lead to it sinking and a total loss, so you can see the importance.
So not a bad practice on cars, if there is room.:thumb2

I suppose I could fit another on less damaged rubber, but I will see how it goes. The hose is around £30 new, so I may well invest in replacing both RAD hoses in the near future but until then Im happy its sorted!

Provided you keep oil and diesel off the hoses, they do last a long time.
Mine are still the originals, but about 6 years back, I had to tighten the odd jubilee clip, as over time the hose under compression does compress, causing a slight weep.
