BOSCH MAF - Cleaning?

Hi All

I am still having wonderful power (or lack of issues) The No1 injector is giving me the right reading, so i dont think thats the issue (thank god!), full new exhaust, recent air/ fuel filter and oil change...... the list goes on!

I unplugged the maf (bosch one) and went for a drive about with out it, and have to say, i didnt really notice a differance! Which kind of makes me think that could be it!? But, on looking at the MAF unit - its as clean as a whistle inside - the grill has no gunk on it and its all shiny, and literally brand new looking inside. We pulled out a cassette looking piece (only way i can thing to describe it) from the top with little silver bits on it and it looked (as far as i know!) clean. Do these kind of MAFs have a 'giveaway' that they are knack*red? I know the other sort have little wires that need to be cleaned, but this looks like a sealed unit? Really need to get this power issue sorted now! Its ridiculous!

Clean it with carb cleaner or other isopropanol product. Shake *gently* and repeat. Let it dry before reinstall.

If no better, replace.

Do i just apply to the black cassette thingy, or does that pop open too? Apologies - a little out of my depth as you can probably tell!!

One of the reasons the Bosch unit fails regularly is because it has a self-cleaning mechanism that the Hitachi doesn't (don't ask me how the latter keeps clean it just does).

At some point in the ignition on/off cycle (i.e. every time you drive the truck) it overheats itself to burn off any residue, so in theory theres nothing to clean off - but this constant high heating eventually burns it out.

I have just rung our local nissan dealer and have reserved a new MAF! £95!!! Ouch!

I just hope thats the issue! On the plus side, if its not, they seem to fry that often, i will probably need it at some point or other!

Is there a particular way you need to fit them? What i mean is, can i just take the old one off and plonk the new one on without having to reset/ reboot anything?

Yes - i thought it was a little on the pricey side! Last time i got a quote (a few months back granted, it was about £67.

Might ring the other 'not so local' local branch and enquire as to their price!

Just rung the other dealer - not got one in stock, but can have one for Friday and £66.16 please!!!! So Friday it is!!!

And - I cant collect it as its further around the outer ringroad than i thought (wont be able to make it in my lunch hour - especially at the current slug speed the truck is going!) - so, my long suffering other half is going instead to get it - so i even saved myself some fuel too!! LOL

Fitted new maf- WOW- wheel spin out of road end, and off like the clappers! Fantastic! Its like it found the engine again!

Well, woman actually, so lets all be thankful that the sensor is the easiest part EVER to remove and replace! Even I can manage 4 bolts and some claspy things! :augie

I've got a '97 Mav swb Commercial and is very gutless when setting off easiesty thing in the world to do is stall it!, was pretty sure it was the MAF, when in for an MOT, they said it had failed and are now struggling to get hold of one, what type is it?? the 'R20?'

There are two types and its stamped on the MAF...one is Hitachi and VERY expensive (£300+), the other is Bosch and easy to get from dealer - can't remember recent price but less than £60.

Dos it run EXACTLY the same with MAF disconnected?

Sorry i found that it is the Hitachi version, i opnened a new thread when i realised it wasn't the Bosch unit.

It runs marginally better without the MAF Connected, ironically it still passed the emissions test on its MOT
