HE HE... not that sort of bong...:augie but now I have your attention...

Since I did my 2" body lift, and fitted the 3" rear spring spacers, I get a funny bong noise when I go over bumps... Seems particularly noticeable when going round left hand bends, and you softly bounce over a small bump, or when going over speed ramps (not at speed). I have had a really good look round (several times, both with wheels lifted, on the ground, and with either side lifted), and a couple of times thought I had found it, but to no avail... the best way to describe it is, it's like hitting a large metal oil barrel with a wooden baseball bat. It's not mega loud, but that sort of hollow metal boing sound.

I found the rear bowden cables were not at a good angle, and did pull a bit so I moved the mounting for them to a much smoother angle, but it made no difference. I have checked the exhaust, and that is fine, again, I did think that maybe it was touching the N/S shock, but upon closer inspection, it misses, so it's not that. I have replaced the rear anti-roll bar drop links, but as said, this is a boing sound rather than a bang.

Anyone else had this on a lift, and did you find out what it is?

Not had any noises like that since I did my lift.
I know what you mean about the angle of the cables and it's on my to do list.
I also modded the bracket that holds the brake ferrule block on the rear diff so it sits a couple of inches higher up.

See if you can find a big "pothole or dip" drop each individual wheel into it slowly and see if you can replicate the noise, it should identify the area atleast.

I'm lifted but nothing springs to mind, unless the body lift bolts were jumping about with too much slack perhaps? :nenau

Only thing I can think of is poss the rear ARB due to it now sitting at a different angle after the lift. If you can get someone to stand one the towbar & bounce the back end up & down whilst your under the truck you might be able to spot where it's coming from:augie

I am petty sure it's not the body lift, as I did the suspension about 4 days before I did the body, and I noticed it straight after the suspension lift. While I was doing the suspension, I noticed the rear exhaust mount was only hanging by one side of the loop, and assumed that it had decided to snap after I disturbed it. It was only when I was replacing that at the same I did the body lift, I realised it was still hanging on the one side, so not the culprit.

It's not the Body lift bolts, as I double checked all the bolts on the body lift about 2 weeks after I did it.

I have tried all sorts with popping wheels into holes and bumps, and it definitely the rear end, when it is compressed, but the car has to be doing 20mph or so, and just a dip in the road that makes the suspension ise and fall will do it, it does not do it driving up a kerb or some such as that is too slow... It also seems to do it more with a full tank of fuel, and when we had a full tank, plus we had the boot full of books for the charity shop, anything that made the back bounce did it mildly while diving, so it is weight related, which implies suspension, but does not do it when static on the drive being rocked... I actually wondered if it was fuel in the tank sploshing against the tank, but then I would have thought it would be more noticeable when it was emptier.

Cheers, I have not noticed anything tight on the Ferrule block, but I will give it a check.

I have tried standing on the back and bouncing it, but I can't reproduce it when the car is parked. I must admit that the anti-role bar was my last guess... Bigbunny is just in the process of making me some longer drop links, so it will be interested if that stops it. I guess I could try taking it off just to prove the point... see how the weather is...

Are you still on the standard shocks Clive or have you fitted longer ones ? just wondering if a shock is bottoming out on the dips in the road:nenau If you wanted to rule out the ARB i'd just remove one of the drop links or even take the thing off then do another test drive
EDIT you were posting as I was doing this reply

Ahhhh... now that is a good point.... I was saving up for new shocks, so still have the original ones on.... thank you, something for me to look into...:clap

Unlikely to be a shock bottoming out if you're still on originals bud although anythings possible. Have you still got full size bump stops?

Yes. I put some more thought into that last night, and it seems to do it when suspension is compressed, rather than at full stretch, but still a good excuse to give to the wife for needing longer better shocks. Lol

Yes still on full stops.

My first thought, and I have not done a lift, and following previous discussions, and engineering logic..
The suspension lift at the rear has has moved the axle down compared to the chassis, but you need to look at the panhard rod, this moves in an arc, and will in effect move your axle in the direction towards the upper panhard mounting point.
Now the suspension tie rods each side will no longer be swinging in the vertical plane, and may make metal to metal contact, at the sides, so worth a look, and with the tension, could make a boing noise.

Others in the past, have fitted an extended panhard rod, and even fitted threads to it, to allow further adjustment.
The panhard rod is an essential part of the suspension as it stops the chassis falling to one side of your axle.

Something to think about.

there is a good thread on it here.....

.

The panhard always moves in an arc and the axle always moves from side to side at different points of axle articulation. In fact the whole thing is only ever parallel at one small point in the middle somewhere.
That said, it is good practice to relocate the panhard mount down by the same as your lift amount. Stops the axle being predominantly off to one side.
Even if you don't extend it I doubt the bushes are that goosed or you'd have noticed a wobbly back end already :p

...or you'd have noticed a wobbly back end already :p

If it was as wobbly as that in your avatar... who would mind lol...:augie
I can't believe I just wrote that lol...
:lol

Filthy man...

uncle Rustic nothing anymore :lol

That avatar has had me fixated for hours on end before now!!!!

I even tried to get someone to copy it before :augie

I have lots of constant bong noises from my car, usually, it is my bong rolling around behind my chair!!!

I think that came about originally 'cause someone put a saucy pic on the forum. The old powers that be (were) had a hissy and banned all such enjoyment. I may have reacted badly at the time and came up with some equally saucy avatars :lol
Not long after that Bat took over :thumbs
