...Oh forgot to mention, earlier the Irish chap managed to blow a fuse in the boiler somewhere... Had to switch off the house power  :augie

And they say you MUST use a gas safe engineer to work on your boiler....hmmmm....

:doh

Hi Rick, yes it's the reset button that flashes fast. Even if you reset it whilst water or heating is on it waits for 5 seconds then flashes come back again.

As it happens up until this guy left we would get regular red flashing on reset, now we have no pilot light, in his defense the board was resetting the pilot every several seconds... No water on board. It was a little orange strip across the bottom of the board that kept sparking, the cases are all back on now. :doh

We did look at the list of items in the manual it said, harness, fan or pcb I believe. Th fan is kicking in when the boiler is switched on and off so not that.

yep your board has gone/going but get the guy who fits the new board to test the fan as these fail and blow boards, fan and board = close to £500 better in this case to get a new boiler at currently around £650 do not expect any modern boiler to last much more than ten years, Rick

Ah, well this one has been fitted for 10 years and is marked as 14 years old.

It seems the AA are paying for all of this so er yeah, can't complain.

We have also found the house for us, and our offer was accepted today, so we only need the boiler to work for 2 months or so :augie

Looking at the boiler now, I can hear the missus using the got water tap... The warning is flashing fast still and no pilot light, just a constant ticking in the boiler..

The dude was good though, parts ordered, here Wednesday morning to fit it

I forgot another area of your expertise was boiler stuff Rick

According to the guy who commisioned my new boiler, if you do not flush the system and fit a magnetic filter the heat exchanger will clog up causing the computer so say NO:eek: This is detailed in the fitting instructions which being a boreing old fart I always read several times, instruction also specify a scale reducer

I flushed my system which is 25 years old, fitted the filter, it got almost full in around an hour, so I checked it daily, slowly the amount of black muck reduced

Sorry mate you are being coned, that black magnetite is present in all water systems inhibited or not and causes no problems, Rick

Hmm interesting re the black sludge, it certainly is a horrid thought, given our situation it's a lot of money to fork out, I certainly hope it's behaving itself.

I hope atleast I have disproved his theory, he stated that because the unit was partially blocked only limited water could pass through and in turn the unit slowly overheats as the water cannot cool it ne then once it reaches that critical temperature it shuts off.

Fair enough, but the fact that it latest about 4 mins on hot, then I went and reset and immediately it lasted another 4 mins again suggests it was not heat issue as if it were hot from the first one, it would not then do another 4 mins.

That's my theory anyway :augie

Boiler Issues

Not sure what type of boiler you have but as previously posted flushing is generally a bit of a waste of time unless you have microbore pipework or an old primatic system.

If yours is a fully pumped system with a hot water tank then fitting a magnetic gadget is not much help as its essentially a closed system with the same water circulating in the boiler heat exchanger.

If you have no hot water tank then my understanding is you must fit magnetic gadget to prevent the build up of lime scale.

I had my boiler replaced last month the old unit was a Baxi Bermuda on a primatic system that I had installed as a direct replacement back in 1987. It broke down twice in 27 years. A new gas valve sometime around 1995 and a new pump in 2011. Never had any problems with the circuit board.

Just been converted to a fully pumped system and had another Baxi back boiler fitted. Its their modern replacement called a BBU boiler. The Heating Engineer told me that no one makes a boiler now that would last 27 years. He rekoned 10-12 years is tops for modern systems. On his advice I extended the manufacturers warranty to 6 years for £99.00 extra.

be careful here as a condition is that it is fully serviced every year by a gas safe engineer at a likely cost of £100 plus = over £600 which if you saved is best part way to a new boiler, Rick

Sty he

Quick update from yesterday, another boiler man returned, no lights on boiler atall... Se he changed the pcb... Still nothing. They looked at the new switch, which had completely melted!!!! Oh crap....

Luckily he had another which he fitted. Now all is ok.

and a power flush was stated as the be all cure!!!!!! yea right, like I said on first post mumpties, Rick
