any other views on this problem please

Yes you are in the right place and club

Sounds like your glow plugs are not working properly and not heating up., even if your glow light comes on.

Go to to the workshop "Downloads" and have a look for the Glow plug check.

Does sound like glow plugs. After 10 minutes you will find it's warmed up enough.
I think one of mine has gone as well, Milners approx £8 I've bought 2 in last 3 years. 2 are still the original. (13 years) . Might just buy another couple just in case. The biggest part is stripping off the bus bar to check which one, then test it, re-assemble it.... order part and undo it all again.
Best to buy one or two, test and replace as you go.
So they are normally reliable. 10 minutes to fit, on a TD anyhow, no intercooler to worry about.
A simple test is to disconnect the bus bar (Ignition off), if you haven't got a multimeter, get a 12 Volt bulb say 5W side light (or 21watt)

Battery +ve---------------5Watt bulb----------------> touch onto centre pin of glow plug.
Good ones, the lamp will light, duff one, it won't.

Problem is when 2 go.. on a cold day.... could test out the battery.
Best regards, Rustic
