No respect for people who died for their country - dozens of monuments laid on their backs in Brecon cemetery, including this one for my great uncle who died in a flying accident WW1 and his mother (my grandmother), who was buried with him later.

Bloody thing was solid as a rock last time I visited a year or so ago.....and no plans to repair it either, so that a fairly rare RFC crest carved in marble (very prone to frost damage) is now exposed to long-term damage.

I'll have it put back of course but the cemetery looks like a bloody bomb site now - this is what we pay our council tax for.:doh

are we allowed to say phuckin barstewards they should be shot or sent to afghanistan like our brave men and women ( my son included , hes due to be posted shortly ) ........ twats oops sorry :augie

They have done this in a cemetry local to me. The reason?

They could potentially fall on child. I haven't checked lately, but the places where we honour the dead are not officially playgrounds and just maybe the parents could take some responsibility.... Sorry started to sound like Mr Angry there... Rant Over!

Regards

i'm sorry what? they have purposefully removed the cross and laid it down? without your consent? I'm sorry but its the first i've heard of this, so dont know the facts, but if it were me, i'd be beyond anger and fury, and be kicking the doors down at the local council office. how dare they dis respect the dead liek this? the friggin COUNCIL, who BANG ON ABOUT THE "YOUTH OF TODAY BEING VANDALS" and they are doign it themselves? disgrace, i dont mean to over react, its just i cannot stand dis respect of any kind, i just cant tolerate it.

let me know if you need a hand putting it back together.

Apparently its been quite widespread but most of us didn't know. Seems there have in fact been five deaths in recent years.....one of them apparently a bloke pissed coming home from the pub who took a shortcut (to heaven!) across the cemetery, and the other four were kids climbing on gravestones....as you say, doing stuff they shouldn't have been doing, so no different in my mind to playing on the railway, main road etc..., parents today don't seem to teach their little 'darlings' a thing do they!

But you'd think they'd do something, especially where a war grave is concerned. Still, don't mind paying, it just sucks that some knobhead is creating a job for himself by panicking about anything that moves (or doesn't!)....:doh

It's infuriatingly beurocratic nonsense. Oh let's just take apart grave stones shall we, and while we are at it encase cars in sponge and keep planes attached to long wires or perhaps let's just repair the damage done and get on with life?

Isnt it just a load of bollocks. We are so bloody risk adverse the next few generations will be afraid to go out without their cotton wool overcoats.

Its very sad to see gravestones laid down like that and Im quite suprised Brecon of all places with its military connections and history would do that :nenau

I was in Brecon about a year and a half ago and took time out to gor round the museum :thumb2 superb.

its funny i watched harry brown the other night, you know the michael caine film. when you think living like thats reality for millions of people . the likes of the little bastards in that film . actually make the nice people of society's life hell .

and then they cry health and safety , or where's my human rights.

so your right dave Isnt it just a load of bollocks.

strange... watching that actually made me feel better, with all my problems going on . it reminded me just how shit some peoples lives really are and what they have to live with every day.

with all this election stuff going on . with the Tories labour , lib dems. even the bnp.

why the hell has no one started the justice party you know someone who will actually give the people of our fair land some well earned justice.. forget all this your not british or lets bail banks out and all the other meaningless shite... how many's peoples lives are ruined by little barstards.... how many days off work are caused by little barstards... how much do little barstards cost our society

was i ranting ?

Its all down to lack of discipline and respect, two news stories this week amongst the election babble. one the teacher who was driven to maddness by the treatment he recieved from ill disciplined, disrespectful and down right disruptive pupils and the other story about some quango in Europe demanding that the UK stops allowing parents to smack naughty children. I dont mean beating or treating children badly but a sharp smack to let then know that bad behaviour will not be tolerated. Before some one tells me violence besets violence I will say I was brought up during the second world where the violence from our enemies to men, women and children was almost unimaginable and where disrespect and bad behaviour to parents, teachers neighbour or police resulted in a smack, cane or slipper (or if criminal behaviour the BIRCH) . Most children and youths were mainly well behaved. Teachers have told me that they are not allowed to shout at their pupils as it may "upset them", no bother about the rest of us being upset. I have told off unruly children and the look on their faces it would seem that they have never been told not to misbehave. regards bri

Not a h&s freak but I would not blame h&s for this. What you have probably found is that some of the people hurt or family of the ones killed have sued the councils. So in order to protect their law suits they lay down the stones so the problem is no longer there.

Councils & Headstones

Yes it has happened here in Bexhill, although the reason given is "They might fall and hurt someone" from what I have seen it would have taken a 14 stone guy to push them over, "Fall???", Rick

Well its going to cost me £240 to have the thing raised again, which I am next week - apparently it needs drilling and fixing with two stainless steel spigots and then epoxied to the plinth.

I thought I'd take the opportunity of putting a tablet down for my mother who died a couple of years ago (my old man scattered her ashes and didn't bother with a memorial) - the grave is that of her grandmother and great uncle - bloody cheeky sods at the council want another £75 fee for the privilege (after I've paid to have the headstone raised again!), so guess theres going to be some 'discussion' next week!:doh

I travel all over europe to visit ww1 and ww2 graves and memorials(sad i know but there are great museums and i get a chance to ride my Harley)

Without exception the cemetries are immaculately kept and the kids would not dream or dare to vandalise the graves.

You have paid for the privilege to have a marked grave and the people who you pay to take care of it have caused the damage and the distress of seeing the memorial stone dismounted NOW want you to pay to put it right.

F.... off they are having a laugh, speak to the Royal british legion, SSAFA, regiment, squadron or Corp association and any other organisation that have a vested interest in preserving the memory of our fallen heroes. I am especially surprised to see this in the Brecon area as it was stated in a previous post have a large conection withthe armed forces community.

hape you get it sorted

I tend to agree but H&s is meant to assist not obstruct or allow a hiding place.

In the case of gravestones falling on people I would suggest on many occasions its either the injured party should have been more careful because the council maintained them properly or the council didnt maintain them and the ip has a justified complaint.

Either way h&s helps provide the guidleines but in this case it seems someone is hiding in the cupboard under the h&s umbrella ;)

i dont think its vandalisim , its the council who laid them down so they dont fall over ...... still highly disrepectfull though

It was indeed the council.....which why I thought it a bit of a cheek to ask for an additional charge to put an extra tablet on it.

This has been very widespread apparently; I'm surprised that people haven't made more of a fuss, but I suppose thats very British isn't it  I guess since we don't all spend every waking hour in the local cemetery its not so noticeable.

Because of his history, I'm planning to chat up the local RAFA in Brecon and see if they would do some kind of low-key commemoration when the stone goes back up.

He wasn't a hero of any kind but he was one of the original members of the Royal Flying Corps and went to France at the very outbreak of war with the BEF...served there for three years as a Serjeant engineer (MoD spelling, very odd, no idea why)...then returned in 1917 to do his pilot training.....during his first solo at Rendcombe aerodrome in Glos, he stalled the aircraft and crashed....burst into flames but inquest determined that he had broken his neck on impact and died instantly thank god.

His mother (my great-grandmother) must never have got over it because she had herself buried in the same grave some 15 years later when she died. No idea where her hubby is to this day, searched all over South Wales!!

You have to just hope the kids of today grow up to realise what some people did for them don't you......

Well its back up....I'm £240 worse off but its up just in time for the anniversary of his death on 3rd June.
