So today on the way home from work the bloody EM light comes on whilst I am bowling along on the M25 at 60 :eek::eek: Pulled over and shut the truck off.... Now what to do??? Restarted and sure enough EM light still on... all guages look fine, engine running ok, battery charging and no other lights on:doh So....... rejoined motorway and truck has absolutely no problems at all so build up to normal speed, running like a dream, no knocks, rattles all fine.. so I went about another 5 miles and off the bloody light went !!!! Now it is doing what it should do.... on with ignition and off when driving...cant make it come on :thumb2

So question is (sure it has been asked a hundered times) can I use the paperclip trick on a 2002 mk4 truck (with all stupid electronic control nonsense) and will the codes be there now the light is off????

cheers

Nick

what electronic control nonsense? Theres nowt there that wasn't on the first MkII round headlight variant that I can think of?!

But the answer is yes.....Ray stuck a post up somewhere with a photo of the later connector but its just a case of shorting out bottom left and bottom right and watch the flashes....it does two distinct sets of flashes and the numbers relate to the codes in the manual.

But EML on is as common as muck and rarely anything that warrants an immediate permanent shutdown.

thanks for that... as it is off now I will check at the weekend when I have the time. 1st time on the Terrano for me :nenau:nenau... last time I had an EM light on in my last car it broke down very quickly after it came on ! Will it reset if I disconnected the battery?.. mentioned the electronic bit as I still have problems with the wipers but the truck has no relay for them... they are electronically controlled it seems

Look in the EC section of the manual, it explains how to clear fault codes.

Probably a good idea to clear whatever code appears and sit in wait for it to reoccur, then you MAY have an issue to to deal with.

But, panic NOT

it wont clear if you disconnect the battery, i think you have to do something more than just that like press and hold the break pedal or whilst wearing a starw hat or something like that.

Id certainly check the code tbh, because at that speed, there might have been a hardly noticable timing issue or fuel injection issues, or even just the fuel filter perhaps, all these thinsg can make it flash up, then go away again. For me, id be happier understanding why it did it, and the only way is to check the codes, if they come back clear, all is well!

usually if comes on and wont clear, but after starting is water in fuel filter.

trol did it during deep freeze last month, and i was concerend as first time
it had come on since hgf and piston rebuild.

mind its odd to come on mid journey like that and not clear on restart.

troll still does this with over boost, but its a known troll thing.

can read and clear codes, then clean sheet, start to look again.

just to damn clever, often thought if hadnt come on would have had no
idea of there being an issue, must are warnings, theres even codes for
nats playing up!

only trouble is what if its just fault system thats faulty. dads cavilier had
one like that.....

Not sure what that means? A relay is simply a method of switching heavy current to something via the shortest route, using a longer, thinner cable switched remotely. What do you mean by eletronically operated, or are you talking about the delay function etc..?

There is no relay as such,.. there is a unit referred to in the diag. as "Wiper Amp" this box does control the wipers/delay function etc... I have never seen one in the flesh so do not know much more about it.
It would seem to be an integral part of the wiper switch.
Unless it is potted or sealed it may be repairable though.

Ah ok I see now....but I'd be stunned if that wasn't common to the MkII as well.....I'm not aware Nissan spent any money on upgrading the electrics any time LOL...well apart from raiding the Primera parts bin for the steering wheel and radio controls
