best tyres on the snow

Hi All

whats the best tyre to run on the snow? I have standard H/T M&S tyres on but see that scorpions S/T are recommended in the handbook and wondered if they would perform better or worse in the snow.

Running Cooper Discoverer M & S with snow thread on Mazda pickup. They are a bit worn but they don't give me much grip on the pickup in snow or ice. Have Lassa's on the T2 and have a lot more grip with them on ice although they have equally as much wear as the Coopers. Find the Coopers a bit better in the mud though for what that's worth.

Scorpions were the OEM fitment at one time, but not much use in really slippery conditions. I suspect the beloved Kumho KL71s are your best bet......

Morning,

I am the only person to get out of our housing estate, down and then back up the hill into our road.
I had 4 new 31x10.50 R15 General Grabber AT2's fitted the weekend before christmas, had no issues yet. Snow is about 6" deep everywhere and not even the slightest hint of stuckness:clap

Well happy with my choice.

many thanks for the replies. The reason for the post was that my T2 got stuck in the snow. I was pushing it though:naughty and i hate being beaten so I thought I might get new tyres and try again!

My current ones are legal but will need changing soon.

I've got Avon Rangers, 235 75 R15, all with new tread, great on the ice, snow and slush.
I engage 4 wheel drive, then slip in and out on the road to prevent transmission wind up on tarmac, then into 4x4 when stopping or starting on the slippery stuff.
With the auto front hubs engaged, the front prop shaft still turns so you can select 4x4 on the run, with no clicking or clunking.
However if you reverse in normal 2 wheel drive the auto hubs will disengage.

Try to maintain the same tread on the tyres on the rear axle, otherwise the Limited Slip Diff may not allow the rear wheels to slip due to different circumferences, making it more lively not only on roundabouts, but also on the straight roads.

i htnk the best tyres depend enirely on the vehicle they are fitted too!
I have owned all sorts over the years, a few shoguns and troopers, 3 T2's
l200's, etc. etc.

for example my wifes suzuki now has yokohama geolander go12's which are designed for snow and are pretty much unbeartable

my ford ranger (mazda bt50) has the factory fit bridgestone duellers which are to be frank, crap! an i have found them to be so on evey car i have driven in snow and ice.

I have found a swb t2 with BFG AT's takes some beating in any conditions :thumbs

I'm running Falken T110s, 235/75/R15, no issues. Excellent tyres for the occasional off tarmac spasm.

I know it's not a Terrano as most on here are but...
I am running on Grandtreks [Grandcraps in Australian web sites] not good in mud, but have been okay in the snow and ice. having said that i'm in 4 all of the time...:augie
I do need better AT tyres though.

I agree about the General Grabbers they seem fine in snow on my recently acquired Mav. The car is miles better than previous Subaru and Seies 2A Land Rover I owned. In fact, it is better in evey way bar one - the heater which is pitiful!

well we have about 3-4" of snow here, and it feels like im running on slicks :lol
i cant get the front hubs to engage, might have to bite the bullet and order some manuals, only problem is we dont normerly have the snow for too long, so is it worth it? or wait and make do, a bit skint after xmas. :doh:nenau

When we were up the slopes the other day it was easily 4 - 6 inches and didnt have a problem once. The autos were no problem and dragged up to 5 tow lines with all the riff raff and dogs

Try it in 4WD low Tez, makes all the difference. In this weather its really easy to induce a 4WD powerslide (I wuz doin it all nite :augie) but in low it just won't play, much better for pulling away in slippery conditions.

i have never found they are worse, with good tyres and the LSD you can do most stuff including snow in 2wd, maybe as you say it is being used to front wheel drive.

I have to say that my X-trail with a/t tyres is much better than my T2 which has *very tarmac* type Michelins on it at the moment (what it came with), and in 2wd will easily swap ends!

Virtually zero grip on braking too, ABS goes nuts!

Using 235 75 15's Terra Trac on my swb,no problems so far but then I haven't really tried anything too extreme yet.
