Hi All

I came out this morning to find an unfortunate flat tyre on the back! Grrr!!!

They are all nearly due for changing to be fair, so was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations for some good hard wearing tyres that arnt going to cripple the old bank account!

I do mostly on road, a bit of towing a horse trailer and a little bit of 'tracks and fields' to get to the stables and on and off show grounds! I was thinking off going all weather? I have seen some Avon ones that are 85% on road / 15% off, some pirelli scorpians that have a good read up, but the more i see the more i am boggled!!!

So, what do you guys have on, or would recommend for my kind of driving? I am not a tyre name snob, so brand is not important - as long as they do the job!

Thanks!! :)

Scorpions are expensive but used to be the original factory fitment at one time.

DON'T put mud tyres (MTs) on, look for a decent set of All Terrain (AT tyres).

Depends what your budget is really; General Grabber AT2s are a good all rounder with decent tread and wear capability that a lot of people on here (me included) use....and road noise is not a problem (as it can be with some aggressively treaded tyres.

Sad news is that tyre prices shot up over the last autumn/winter and have stayed up so expect to pay.

Also, if you are on a budget, don't upsize, stick with standard size and just get a better tread pattern - they are more than adequate for anything but the most serious offroad use. Problem with upsizing is you need a fifth for your spare which adds 25% to the bill (remembering that you can't run different sizes front to rear on a 4x4 as it knackers the diff in 4WD).

And if your local garage/tyre depot is prepared to fit them, Camskill is probably the cheapest online supplier.

When I bought my T2 about 20 months ago I had Nankang fitted all round (including the spare), at the time they were around £50 each. Technically they are a road tyre, but the car is now in Spain where 75% of the use is on mountain tracks, and in spite of two Spanish winters (lots of rain, deep mud etc) they have never let me down. They have now done around 11-12,000 miles and are about 70% worn - the spare has never been on (never had a puncture). If it were possible to get these in Spain I would have no hesitation in buying them again. The only downside to them is that spinout can sometimes happen on wet roads (if you floor it coming out of roundabouts etc), but as these 2.7 diesels are quite torquey, I believe this happens with most makes of tyre. They are a nice looking tyre with a chunky tread and all the lettering (including 4x4)picked out in white.

Thanks for the link to the thread and the advice on what you are all currently using.

Im not changing the size - i am on standard 235/70/r16, and have a brand new spare thats that size so no point in moving size.

Terranical - I did laugh at your 'quite torquey' comment! As i still have not got to the bottom of my power issue, spinning out is not a problem!! Setting off is a chore at the moment!!! :nenau

if moneys an issue, I used Kingpin At's, lovely big nobbly grip, nice on the road, nice off the road, great in the snow, not bad at all in the wet and very cheap. had mine on over two year now and they hardly look worn!

then again i drive like a nanny.....

I've got a set of Avon rangers on mine, not my choice but they were a new set just fitted when i had them, my own dream tyres would be BFG AT's or General AT2's but the Avon's have been pretty good for the same sort of things you do! And i tow trailers in fields every day :thumb2

General Grabber A/T 2 :)

I just started using them and will never go back.

Good price and good quality.

these any good ?

Had a full set of THESE fitted last Friday and am over the moon with them at the moment.Paid £260 delivered when I bought them a month back.Very quiet on the Terrano infact you can't hear any road noise at all.The drive is a little firmer now as well. They fit the arch nicely and they have had a good test on the road on roundabouts and up to speed on my local dual carriageways and I can't fault them.
The Terrano was great offroad with my ole slick tyes I had so guess these will perform very wel indeed.
Will do pics when I can

yep, 265's go on without any mods, I've got them on mine now, and it does increase your speed a little too.
