it sounds like the starter to me. I fecked about with mine for ages, changed the ignition, wiring, in the end, i put on a new starter and bang, perfect, no slow starting, and no delayed starting etc. The battery I have though must be super becaus eI havent driven my t2 for about 6 months now, and it STILL starts first turn of the key...

Well I tried and failed today, just too cold and partly not enough confidence.

Cables are all fine, slight discolouration but nothing to write home about.

Got price from Andrew Pages for starter motor, two prices. One not cheap and the other is totally outrageous (Bosch), can you guess which mine is:doh

Local garage that has done work for me in the past, called him and he could fit it in. Anyway tried to start it slowly turning. Got eldest lad out of bed to help push it, just as he got through the door I tried again and blow me the thing fired up:doh

Anyway it's down at the garage, I haven't had a call back to say it's ready so it'll be tomorrow before I get it back.

Well I'm starting again:clap:clap and don't half crank over fast too:thumbs

Only problem, just been taking cards around people and got back home to find steam coming out from down there near the starter:doh Not sure if it's slush that splashed up there or if I have a leak somewhere:(

Yep a new starter motor.

Now I'm a bit worried about a possible water leak, hope it's not a core plug or something. Gonna drive like a vicar tomorrow and see if there still steam and if there is I'll be off back down the garage:nenau

hmm, could be slush, it is open down there a bit, but I would check if the Mech has knocked something he shouldnt have. I am going to take alook at mine to see what pipes are around there, any ideas about the steam, is it from water you think ,or other fluids? does it smell? is it definatly coming from that area??

I just had a look at mine. No water pipes are far as I can see, just brakes and what looks like power steering at the back above the starter motor (or clutch possibly??) SO I would check your clutch fluid, and brake fluid. If you look, water pipes run to thr rad, then back round the other side, everything else is brakes, clutch and electric. Had a look at engine block above and around it, its just solid engine, so not sure if it can be a leak from there but I expect it would be easy to trace, because if its a leak, it will freaze tonight!

Just moved the car and found a small pool of antifreeze so it's def got a leak. If there are no pipes then may be a core plug bust which will be a real pig!!!

Jim

whats the core plug???

Imagine a bottle top made of metal and various sizes. These are inserted in to hole in the water jacket of the block and head. I think the idea is that if the coolant freezes it pops a plug out rather than cracking the engine.

Jim T

Ahh, are those the plug like things I noticed down by the starter??

Well just been down to the garage and met the bloke coming in to work. Anyway he says that he thought the expansion bottle looked low so he topped it up to 3/4 full:doh.

Anway he says keep a bottle of water in the car and keep an eye on it for now and see how it goes. At the end of day I've got breakdown cover and a second car so I wont be stuck if there is something wrong with it so I'm not gonna worry too much cos it's CHRISTMAS:clap:clap:clap

Glad your back on the road Jim:thumbs
Merry christmas:clap
