My battery started playing up this morning requiring a jump start and it sounds as if the battery is on its way out (the alternator is fine). The current battery is an Exide Excell EB704 rated at 70Ah and a cold crank (CCA) of 540A. Looking at other threads here I gather this CCA rating is on the very low side for a 3.0l Terrano. So I'm looking at a Varta G8 at 95Ah and CCA 830A but is 306mm long

Will this G8 physically fit in the 3.0l Terrano or, even, what is the maximum dimensions of battery that will fit without modification?

Thanks

Take a look at this thread below. You'll see my original which may have been a correct listed battery for the 3 litre. However, you'll then see what I replaced it with which I think is far more suitable. I did have to move the earth cable to make it fit which is bolted through the inner wing behind the battery. Also remember the battery posts are a different way around to the 2.7

Good luck

The battery you linked looks like it's for the 2.7 as the posts are wrong way around for the 3 litre.

Mine came from Halfords on a price match for around £100 mark, it's a few weeks ago so can't quite remember.

Jims battery is snug!!!!! Man alive his engine had to breathe in when he fitted that lol

Hmm hmm may I ask who need a tug from another 3 litre to start the other weekend :lol

But yes it is a tight fit, the top hose touches. As we talked about it the other weekend the glow plug relay could be twisted around to sit inside the wing cavity to allow an extra inch or so. Reckon that big battery will start the truck nicely when it's cold this winter.

With the heated seats switched on too :D:thumb2

Oh yes, the butt warmers:thumbs

I've read on the internet that the 3 litre doesn't need as much juice as the 2.7 but personally I'd rather be belt n braces.

Anyhoo hope the link to mine helped you.

I'd heard that about the 3 litre too from someone :nenau

What I do when looking for a battery upgrade ?

If you do not want to change any wiring, clamping etc I have found the best way to get an upgrade that definitely fits is firstly to find out what the battery type number is that you have fitted to your vehicle.

I am not talking aH or c.c.a. but the code that defines the size of your battery case that all aftermarket manufacturers use. In the case of our Jeep it is a Type 019 this defines the way it is clamped down, the size and layout of the terminals and the dimensions. You can get a variety of aH & c.c.a. for a particular casing size. With some of the newer battery technology designs you can get a lot of extra from the same casing size.

If you search the internet you should have no trouble finding your particular casing type for my old Terrano the local car spares shop gave me the type number when I was getting prices.. I measured my old battery in mm then did a search on e-bay to find the battery type, I also cross checked with Halfords. Be careful with the likes of Eurcarparts as they supplied me with a Mini battery that would only fit after I had put polystyrene under it - not helped as one of the Mini terminals is a rigid bar connection!

Once you have firmed up your battery type and cross checked it you can then go on sites like e-bay and battery megastore with confidence - I bought our Jeep battery from e-bay supplied by the Battery Megastore cheaper on e-bay than buying direct!

The other interesting thing is that quite often your Premium Brands will be a slightly lower c.c.a. The original Jeep one was a Bosch 830 c.c.a. The type 019 in our Jeep now is a Yuassa was £86 900c.c.a.the same specification type 019 in our BMW was £65 -850 c.c.a.

A bit long winded but hope this helps you decide.

Is yours a type 027 ??

Type 027

If yours is a type 027 you can get up to 830 c.c.a. easily and probably more if you look around. It just costs more.
