Bank Card Fraud

Hi all, watch out shopping this Christmas.

We've just found out today that the wifes card has been cloned. They've taken us for hundreds and hundreds. Money saving Expert Web site has a lot of threads about the same thing from people who have bought from Amazon over the last few weeks!!! I'm not saying it's because of shopping there but worth taking precautions.

We are so carefull, we don't shop online often. We watch where we pay by card. Never give info out. Burn paperwork and don't shred.

Still waiting to see what the bank are going to do but as of 6 o'clock tonight they were still trying to spend our money. I'm pretty sure the bank will give the money back to us but it'll be timescale.

First we heard about it was an indian call centre phoning mobile phone wanting details from the wife. She told them to phone our home phone at 5:30 and wouldnt give number as they should have it if it is our bank. Anyway her mobile rang at 5:30 so she ignored it as it was the same number. Then house phone rang, I answered and it went dead. We googled the number and results said that it was a scam phone number. I wasn't happy and got wife to phone the bank as she wanted to ignore it. Turns out it is a fraud.

So watchout shopping online!

Haven't got a clue what's work purchases and what's for crimbo half the time :doh
However a few months back I did get a call from the bank on sat afternoon
I'd been cloned , well the card anyway:lol They asked if I had just bought 1200 quids worth of gold :nenau No says I , ah then I was told about the 120 quids worth of jewellery and several vodafone top ups etc.
The bank said they'd stop the payments going through now, and I got the other monies back on the Monday sorted :thumbs
New card a few days later, simples

No as it turns out it actually was the bank. I have to say though an Indian call centre ringing asking about our details? alarm bells would ring about that really.

Very few banks use UK call centres. That's one of the reasons I use the Co-op bank
Mobile numbers are also available Rick.
It's just a case of which data base it's related to :sly

yes I have to say as of late I have started getting scam calls, every person that has ever called me that is genuine are in my phone memory, so when I get an unrecognised number my suspicions are raised straight away however it is very often a new customer from recommendation, but sometimes a scam call and sometimes from a government office which usually come as "call" so I answer carefully and establish who it is before giving verbal diarrhea down the line, Rick

Any calls coming in as "call", withheld number, international or out of zone call get relegated to the answerphone. As you Rick all known numbers on my phone .
I bought a very useful disk a few tears back for business called UK Info Disk 2009 . All info from phone directory, electrol roll etc can be searched from post code, phone number, part name etc.

I made it simple. No cards to clone and I never answer the phone unless I know who you are and I've got caller display at home too. And I have a dead number for filling in webforms. If you want me email me.
If you use your card to shop online make sure its through a reputable handler such as paypal. If its in a shop don't hand over your card get them to hand you the machine. Then you know it hasn't been swiped through a second machine for cloning!

you will get your money back though, no worries there. Happened to me years ago, except it was via Sainsburys Petrol Station we think, spent a little bit on top ups in the supermarket but I realised pretty quick and it got sorted, was about £50 ish....

Yep get those too, I ask for some security information to prove who they are, and they say under the data protection act they can't.

So I say write to me too.

If you want to prove it is a scam, give them the wrong information, then if they are genuine they will say so.

If they don't say, then you know it's a scam, and you can decide to wind them up or not, but the issue is that since you gave them some information, then you will probably go on a "MUG" list, this list gets sold on to other scammers, as there is more chance of conning you.


As I've said before I keep getting an email from "BT" to say my email will be closed down, unless I reactivate the account by entering my password on their link...... Hmmmm....
Well my email is still working despite my ignoring them.

They probably target a certain age group, so probably from databases that you give your age, eg Car insurance.

For Quotes I never give my DOB to the nearest month.
I can always advise them should I go ahead.

A tip I had from DaveD, it worked for me when i had card problems.

If anyone calls asking for info about your card, tell them you are going to call the number on the back of your card and then hang up and do just that. This way you are in control and can be sure you are talking to the correct department and that they did indeed call you in the first place :thumb2

Well all sorted out now phew!!!! we had the mortgage payment due out on Monday. Yesterday evening when we reported it to them they would not guarantee the payment for the mortgage would be paid. Went into a branch this morning and had a meeting with a great member of staff. They have now refunded all our money and have told us there will be no problem paying our mortgage. Due to our spending habbits it is almost certain that a payment to Amazon where the security breach occured. We have been advised by the bank always shop online using the credit card and transfer funds on to the card from our main account.
We did complain that the banks procedure of calling from an indian call cnetre about the abnormal use made us think they were a scam. As people of said those were our first thoughts. Anywa the advice is to tell the caller that you will call the bank and to make a note on your account of this and also get their name.

PPS They had hired 3 cars, ordered 2 airline tickets to the US, the had ordered tickets from Ryan Air and Easyjet. They had been declined at two travel shops and several filling stations. Didn't stop as they were trying again this morning.

Not all banks are " That good" I had a phone call last July saying they were from the fraud department and asked about a transaction I had made ie. written a cheque for tens of £K.
To my dismay I had just deposited the same amount at my local branch and thought someone had tried to take it out. I put the phone down and went to the local branch. They had ballsed it up putting it through a credit slip as a cheque I was cashing to myself.Took 3 days to sort out, Now with another bank who are more cooperative. David

good rule of thumb is dont use bank card for mail order, use a credit card
so acts as a buffer then cant drain current account.

Well off we go again, the feckers have been at it again. Got £1600 today, again more travel stuff including 2 tickets to Hungary. Poor wife was caused a lot of embarassment in a crowded supermarket. I was on a course and had to come home early so hence I failed it. This is just not on! the bank cancelled the flippin card a couple of weeks ago and they are still letting the sods use the cancelled card. Now the bank can not do anything until Monday so we are stuffed without cash until this gets cleared up. I'm going to demand compo from them now as this is not right when we have done everything right.

jim i use a pay as you go credit card for most things, it can be a pain going to the shop to top it up but..... theres never anything on it unless i want to spend over the internet..

if your money keeps going you might be left with no choice but to use a different bank, well thats what i would be telling them on monday

I'll be telling them in something along those line by letter when this is sorted out. I'm still gob smacked that a major high street bank can still let new payments go through on a card that was cancelled several weeks ago.

Anyway should be sorted once and for all tomorrow. Had an offer of help from a great friend, many thanks to him. Got plenty groceries in as allways and fuel in the tank so we'll manage no problem just so frustrated at the banks stupidity.
