Banjo Filter... .. . ?

It seems that only the early Square head lamped td models have them...

What I want to know firstly is why.?

Why don't the tdi's have them.?

I know it's stopping tiny bits passing through to the pump, injectors then the engine...

Would it hurt if I left it out.?

This has been bugging me for nearly 2 year's now so I'll ask the question :lol

my 02 tdi had one.it was binned when new pump fitted last week.they said pointless and they binned it.

i dont have one, but thats not to say one was not fitted from the factory. it could well have been and lost in servicing over the years.

my view is ... if you have one and its dirty enough to cause you to look for it and give you problems. then it is doing the job it was designed for. so if you have one keep it

no there is something wrong here, I have never got to grips with this banjo filter, the gauze is far too big to collect any crap after coming from the main filter so it has to be on the return line so its function has to be a restriction in the line to keep low pressure up in the pump just like a pin hole restrictor on CAV pumps, as I do not have a diesel, can some one confirm it is on the return line, Rick

well you explain to me if it is on fuel in just what it can do, the paper filter before it takes out bits down to around 80 microns or more, the banjo filter can only take out around 10 microns if that, so it just does not make any sense at all, Rick

Well I think I'm going to bin it as I have several 1995 td's now with good engines as back ups :augie

I'll be the guinea pig :doh

It causes so many problems when blocked for myself & other members & the crap that is in it is microscopic so should pass through...

Only had my maverick since november and its not got a banjo filter at all(removed by previous owner i guess).Was going to order one to put in but never had any problems with mine at all so just left it.

Er wrong way round 200 microns is very small 10 microns is larger particles, I purchase stainless steel mesh and 200 micron mesh is very small hole size compared to 80 micron mesh which I can see with my poor sight, I would guess that paper filters are even greater than 200 micron but have no figure to confirm that, Rick

on a late maverick, it is in the return line with the pressure regulator valve, i did wonder if it was put in the wrong place on some, mentioned this before.
it is shown in the Zexel manaul as being in return, collecting bits of pump? maybe as a guide to when pump is failing like aircraft?

anyway if its there, must be for a reason.

I can fully understand it if it is in the return, its function will be to give a constant pressure to the pump, by way of a restriction, it cannot be there to collect wear particles from the pump, cos if bits that big are collected then the pump failed ages ago, if it is there to collect debris that the main filter has passed then likewise the pump has already been damaged, Rick
