anyone out there help please!!!
have 98 2.8td patrol se five door ,due to resent weather have bin running it in 4H .while leaving a multi-storey car park was on near full lock when there was an almighty bang/jolt was unable to release from 4-wheel drive until clear of car park during which there was another bang.after disengaging and going to 2H there was a good old rattle coming from under neath which stopped eventually and all seems well (at mo)
so is it the front diff? (is it replacable/repairable)
or transfer box?
or something i havent thought about yet
any help /advice would be much appriceted
wife having baby in apx 4 weeks so need transport
apart from this my trol has woked great apart from half shaft seals at front end
thanx

Have you tried putting it back into 4H to see what happens? I.e. Still got 4WD and no unusual noise. Do it on a straight bit of road though.

From what I have read on here (and I'm no expert) it sound like diff wind-up and the bang you heard might just be the the pressure on the wheel releasing as it spins or skips out.

I hope that it works out OK for you and there will some for more informative replies later I'm sure.

Regards

Alan

My suspicion is that you have broken a front driveshaft or worse propshaft, diff etc.

Suspect not jus tyre skip due to the continued rattle. The rattling probably continued till your front hubs dissengaged.

you need to look into this properly ASAP.

Part time 4wds with no centre diffs like ours should not be driven in 4wd unless 4wd is actually needed. It won't give you any extra braking capability and if you start to spin wheels going forward you can easily snick it into 4wd on the move.

yer thought i may have broken something
although its running fine in 2H today
when i invetigate further any ideas on where to sourse parts (seems rocking horse droppings are easier to get)
if its diff is that a replacement axle? or is it servicable i thought the cover was tack welded on? only use 4x4 when needed e.g snow
thanx
